ByMarilynAdams Droughtisahugechallengein our area, as well as in other states and parts of the world. Every living thing needs wa- ter to exist. Without water, we have no crops, nothing for the cattle to graze on, no water for the fish to swim in, etc. Drought is not a new problem. There are many droughts recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible. Josephwasbrought from the prison to promi- nence when God gave him the interpretation of a dream regarding drought. You can read the whole account in Genesis 39:20 through Genesis 41:44. The book of Ruth begins with a drought caused famine in the land. In the prophet Elijah's days there was no rain for three years and six months. There is another drought recorded in 1 Samuel 3:1. It says, "Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread reve- lation." The priests of that day were openly living in sin, and causing the peo- ple to despise God's ways. God's apparent silence is a spiritual drought brought about by sin that closes human ears to His voice. The Bible speaks of God's word as living. He- brews 4:12 in the Ampli- fied says, "For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power (mak- ing it active); it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating the di- viding line of the breath of life (soul) and (the immor- tal) spirit, and of joints and marrow (of the deep- est parts of our nature), exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and pur- poses of the heart." We need God's word to sustain us, to bring course corrections, to encour- age, and to give us wis- dom. He gives His word freely to any who will have it. If His word is not in your heart, then you have a drought in your heart. Colossians 3:16 says, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." Does His living word dwell in your heart? Are you lean- ing on the eternals truths of His word, or are you leaning on your own un- derstanding? Proverbs 3:5-8 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your steps. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones." Have you ever consid- ered that the root to your health problems could be based on the drought in your heart? There is a wonderful promise in Isa- iah 58:11. It says, "The Lord will guide you con- tinually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones; you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail." If you have never put your faith and trust in Je- sus Christ as your per- sonal Savior, then you have a drought in your heart. Jesus died in your place. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him should not per- ish but have everlasting life." Whoever means you. God does not offer salva- tion for a few chosen ones. His offer is for everyone without exception. Ro- mans 10:13 says, "For who- ever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." It is all about applying God's word to your heart. When we believe, we apply the truth that we heard. Ephe- sians 1:13 says, "In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salva- tion; in whom also, hav- ing believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." The gospel is that Jesus Christ came to this earth, died for our sins, was buried and rose again. Eternal truth remains whether you believe it or not. Hebrews 10:27 says, "As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment." Will you re- fuse God's word and die in your sins? Or, will you humble yourself, acknowl- edge that you have sinned against God through un- belief, and joyfully accept His gift of eternal life? Marilyn Adams accepted the Jesus Christ as her per- sonal Savior in 1958. A de- bilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into an intimate re- lationship with Him. He taught her timeless truths that sustain her, and still permeate her present teachings. FINANCES Ch ur ch t o ho st p er so na l fin an ce w or ks hop s By Jennifer Sinco Kelleher Associated Press HONOLULU A white hearse pulled up to the entrance of a downtown Honolulu ca- thedral Thursday, carry- ing the remains of a saint known for caring for ex- iled leprosy patients in the 1880s. A metal box containing the remains of St. Marianne Cope was carried into the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace for what was a cross between a funeral Mass and a homecoming ceremony. She was 80 when she died of natural causes in 1918 at the remote Kalaupapa pen- insula on the island of Molo- kai, where leprosy patients were exiled. Her remains were exhumed from Kalau- papa in 2005 and taken to Syracuse, New York, where her religious congregation is based. Born Barbara Koob in Germany, she immigrated with her family to Utica, New York, when she was a year old. In 1883, the nun accepted a mission to care for leprosy patients in Ha- waii. She gained sainthood in 2012 after the Vatican au- thenticated two miracles that were a result of her in- tercession. Relocation from New York was necessary be- cause the buildings of the campus where her remains were housed are no longer structurally sound, requir- ing the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communi- ties to move to another part of Syracuse. St. Francis sisters carried the box into the cathedral atop a carrier made out of koa wood in the shape of a canoe. It makes sense to keep her remains in Honolulu, as opposed to Kalaupapa, which can be accessed only via plane or mule, said Bishop Larry Silva of the Honolulu diocese. Hundreds packed into the cathedral, where peo- ple lined up for a chance to kiss the box, wrapped in a Hawaiian funerary cloth and draped with lei and a quilt bearing a Hawaiian flag design. "The mortal remains of this frail creature of God... have an incredible spirit of their own, an aura that makes us want to be near them, to be changed by the very odor of holiness that emanates from them," Silva said in his homily. "We want to touch the relics of this woman who dedicated herself to healing, so that we may be healed and may be healers." HOMECOMING Hundreds attend Mass for saint's return to Hawaii ASSOCIATEDPRESS—FRANCISOF THE NEUMANN COMMUNITIES In this 1883file photo provided by the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, Mother Marianne Cope, a nun who dedicated her life to caring for exiled leprosy patients on Kalaupapa in Hawaii, poses for a photographer.
