"My daughter is 2 years old now. One day she's go- ing to know the power of Google. Me having to ex- plain that to her, what hap- pened that night, that's something I have to live with the rest of my life." Rice was referring to a grainy video in which he is shown dragging Palmer, now his wife, from an el- evator at an Atlantic City casino. He did not address the incident at an im- promptu news conference in May, and although he refused to divulge details on Thursday, he dismissed the notion that he was pro- voked. "I don't want to keep re- living the incident. I'm try- ing to move forward," he said. "What happened that night was a huge mistake, and that's what I'll keep it at. I don't condone any of my behavior. I take full re- sponsibility for my actions. My wife can do no wrong." Rice wore a Ravens polo shirt and a pained expres- sion throughout the ses- sion. More than a dozen TV cameras were in place, some telecasting the inter- view live, and several of his teammates stood behind the throng to show their support. Rice, 27, is the team's ca- reer leader in total scrim- mage yards and ranks be- hind only Jamal Lewis in total yards rushing. But this press conference wasn't about football. This was about apologiz- ing for actions that he in- sisted were one of a kind. "It was the first time it ever happened," he said. "I've never had a problem with domestic abuse. This was a one-time incident." In addition to the two- game suspension, Rice was fined three pay- checks totaling more than $500,000. There have been reports that the fine was too light. Rice FROM PAGE 1 After winning their third World Series in 10 seasons last year, with Lester get- ting two of the four wins with a 0.59 ERA against St. Louis, the power-poor Red Sox are last in the AL East with a 48-60 record. They had Thursday off after los- ing for the eighth time in nine games to drop 13 games behind first-place Baltimore. While the Red Sox look toward next season, the A's are determined to take the next step after losing in each of the past two Octo- bers in five-game division series to Detroit. Oakland was off Thursday before returning home to begin a weekend series with Kan- sas City tonight. It's unclear what day Lester would start, though it's likely to be Satur- day. Sonny Gray (12-3) is scheduled for today. Man- ager Bob Melvin has dis- cussed the idea of giving some pitchers extra days between outings to keep them fresh in the second half. "Well I am awake," Gray posted on Twitter when the trade news broke early Thursday. Oakland later sent lefty Tommy Milone to the Twins for outfielder Sam Fuld. Beane believes in start- ing pitching depth, and the A's sure have it. Lester joins Gray, Scott Kazmir and re- cently acquired Jeff Sa- mardzija and Jason Ham- mel, each dealt by the Chi- cago Cubs on July 4. Gomes, a fan favorite who grew up in nearby Petaluma, provides Oak- land with a veteran pres- ence that proved invaluable during the A's run to the AL West title in 2012. The A's reached the playoffs for the first time in six years. He also was a respected clubhouse leader in Boston, which signed him as a free agent before last season. Gomes is hitting .234 with six homers and 32 RBIs in 78 games this season. For Boston, this marks another big move of a starting pitcher to the Bay Area after Jake Peavy was traded to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday for two solid pitching prospects. The 28-year-old Ces- pedes won the past two Home Run Derby titles at the All-Star game. The Cu- ban left fielder is in the third season of a $36 mil- lion, four-year contract he signed before spring train- ing 2012. Cespedes is bat- ting .256 with 17 homers and 67 RBIs, 26 doubles and three triples. Speculation had cen- tered on the Red Sox seek- ing prospects to add to their already deep farm system. That would have given them more young players to use in another deal for an established player, possibly a power- hitting outfielder. They got that in Ces- pedes, whose 17 homers is the exact number hit this season by the nine Red Sox players who spent time in the outfield. And Gomes' six was the most. Lester has said leaving the Red Sox doesn't rule out a return to the team next season. He had said he would take a hometown discount to stay in Boston, but the team's four-year, $70 million offer in spring training fell far short of what he could get on the open market. Lester leaves his only pro baseball organization. Trade FROM PAGE 1 ger events to follow. Ryan Moore was among three players at 65, a good start for someone looking for one big week to get him on the Ryder Cup team. Two more Ryder Cup hopefuls — Patrick Reed and Francesco Molinari of Italy — were among those another shot back. British Open champion Rory McIlroy, who next week will chase his second straight major, was among the leaders until not paying attention to packed sand in a bunker that sent him to a double bogey late in his round. He still had a 69. Leishman has quietly gone about his work in rea- sonable form, with top-10s recently at Congressional and Royal Liverpool. He had the perfect formula for Firestone, a big golf course where good scores are available by keeping the ball in play. "I drove the ball well. It makes this course a lot eas- ier when you're on the fair- way," Leishman said. "It's pretty tough when you're playing from the rough. Then, I hit my irons re- ally well and was rolling the ball awesome. So it's a pretty good combination for a tough golf course." Charl Schwartzel and Justin Rose joined Moore one shot out of the lead. Woods said only a mild breeze and soft conditions from overnight rain al- lowed for scoring, though he noted that no one went terribly low. The 64 by Leishman seemed like a good score, so maybe Woods was basing that on his own experience at a course where he has won eight times. Woods twice has shot his career-best 61 at Fire- stone, including last year on his way to a seven-shot victory. That he managed six birdies was a sign that he was making putts, even though two of his birdies were tap-ins. He still had a few wild moments, starting with a three-putt bogey from 10 feet on the opening hole. He hooked his drive so badly on the par-5 sec- ond hole that he worried it might not clear the lake on the adjacent third hole. It was far enough left to leave him a good angle with a 5-wood that he put on the green for a two-putt birdie. His only big mistake was a shot into the trees on the ninth hole. It took him two shots to get out, and from behind the green he couldn't get up-and-down and made double bogey. Just like two other bogeys in his round, he answered with a birdie with a shot into 6 feet on No. 10. "I feel like I made some progress," Woods said. "As I said, this is only my sev- enth round back. So it's just going to take a little time. I'm starting to get in the flow of things. If you look at my iron shots into the holes today, a majority of them were pin-high. So I'm starting to get the feel back in my hands and get my trajectory under con- trol."
