Staff Sgt. Mikal Hanson, son of Sandra Lang of Red Bluff and Robert Hanson of Redding, is de- ployed and serving as a Security Forces member with the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing at For- ward Operating Base OQAB, at Kabul International Airport. In the pre-dawn hours of July 17, a group of anti-Afghanistan forces gained access to a multi- story building under construction some 350 meters from the base and airport fence line. Fighting from the rooftop and windows on several stories, the attackers be- gan firing rocket propelled gre- nades and shooting automatic weapons at the Afghan Air Force base adjoining the airport, and the U.S. Air Force FOB within the compound. The Tali- ban has claimed respon- sibility for the attack, ac- cording to multiple media sources. Hanson was off duty and sleeping at the time the hostilities began, just after 4 a.m. "My alarm had just gone off and I'd hit snooze," Han- son said. "When I heard the gun- fire, at first it was complete dis- belief. I didn't think they'd have the (courage) to come at us with small arms. But I got past the dis- belief and my adrenaline kicked in. I put on some jeans and cowboy boots — it was just quicker and easier — and went to see where they needed me. I grabbed a (M240B me- dium machine gun) and headed to the tower. I loaded the weapon, peeked up, and saw where they were firing from. We posi- tively identified the target and I opened up, along with the others in my tower with their M4s." The insurgents fired more than 20 rocket propelled grenades at the Afghan, U.S. and coalition forces and assets during the at- tack, detonated a vehicle-borne IED, and donned suicide vests. Due to the suppressive fire pro- vided by Hanson and fellow Air- men, the attacks were not partic- ularly accurate. There was minor damage to facilities and prop- erty, but friendly forces received no significant injuries and no ca- sualties during the battle. The Alcohol and To- bacco Tax and Trade Bu- reau is expected to an- nounce today the estab- lishment of "Manton Valley" American Viti- cultural Area or AVA, ac- cording to a press release issued by Cedar Crest Vineyards. This federal designation recognizes the grape growing region in and around the town- ship of Manton as being uniquely different from the surrounding areas. Vineyards were first planted in Manton in the mid 1970s, but the true quality of the grapes grown there was not fully realized until several small wineries were estab- lished in the early 2000s, the release said. These wineries, using only local grapes, have consistently produced award-winning wines that rival any produced in the state. Each of the Manton Valley vineyards has its own unique microclimate due to differences in el- evation, terrain and soil structures. These differ- ences allow Manton Valley vineyards to grow a wide range of grape varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 11,178-acre viticul- tural area includes 11 vine- yards and six bonded win- eries. Four wineries — Ce- dar Crest, Shasta Daisy, Alger and Ringtail — are open to the public for wine tasting every week- end, noon to 5 p.m. Mt. Tehama is open for tast- ing by appointment, and Indian Peak is open seven days a week. Manton is quickly be- coming a destination for vacationers and a fun day trip for local wine enthu- siasts. That ranking Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor marks a 22-percent, one-week jump in California territory suffering what monitors call "exceptional drought." Climate monitors say those lat- est figures show Northern Califor- nia is in about as bad shape as the rest of the state in the now three- year drought. Exceptional drought is classi- fied as featuring widespread loss of crops and pasture.
