We hope you are enjoying your holiday weekend with friends and family, watching fireworks and firing up the grill.Here’s something that was sent to our mailbox a while back, and we saved it for today: Dear Annie: Several years ago, you printed the words written on the base of the Stat- ue of Liberty. A lot of people seem to have forgotten they exist and what they mean. My parents were immi- grants, and because they came to the U.S., their children had the opportuni- ty and motivation to become doctors, lawyers and artists who pay taxes and contribute to American society. Send these, the homeless, tempest- tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’’ Dear Annie: I am 13 years old and a twin. My sister, ‘‘Trixie,’’ is a popular, funny girl like me. Every- body loves her. She wins awards at school and seems like the perfect kid. I love her a lot, but I’m worried about her. We are similar in all ways except one. Trixie cannot take criticism. She thinks everybody is out to get her. Even if you speak to her in civil tones, she blows up and says you are yelling at her. She’s OK around her friends and will make a joke out of anything they say because she doesn’t take them seriously. But with our parents, coaches and teachers, it’s another matter. Trixie knows everything and refuses to let anybody tell her other- wise. As an example, she’s a decent bas- ketball player, but both her coach and our parents made a constructive sug- gestion (nicely) about the way she handles free throws. Last night, Dad said it again, and instead of replying, ‘‘I’ll work on it,’’ Trixie started screeching and said my father was being mean and horrible. She became irritable, and when Dad came to her room to talk to her, she said, ‘‘Stop screaming at me!’’ and ran off to sulk. You might write this off as normal teenage behavior, but Trixie takes that defiant attitude to another level. The way she twists everything into a per- sonal attack is disturbing, and when she throws a fit, it’s frightening. I don’t know anyone who behaves as extremely as she does. Is there some- thing wrong with her? — Worried in California Dear Worried: Trixie sounds like her hormones are in hyper-drive, but it isn’t necessarily anything to worry about. Does she maintain decent grades? Does she get into trouble at school? Is she still friendly with the same group of girls? These are the changes in behavior that can indicate real trouble. You seem like a caring sister. Please talk to your parents about this, and let them handle it. Ahit that she never imagined PHILADELPHIA (MCT) — It's one of TV's unlikelier success stories. Brooke Elliott was a stage trouper, perform- ing in the national tours of musicals such as "Wicked" and "Beauty and the Beast." Then her agent told her about a prospective Lifetime series, "Drop Dead Diva," that might suit her. "I had a Broadway show audition that day, too," Elliott says. "I thought, 'Oh well, maybe I'll get the play. I don't have a shot at the TV show.'" To her astonishment, she got the part — a role that requires some explanation. Elliott plays Jane Bingum, a smart and zaftig lawyer, who is possessed by the spirit of Deb Dobkins, a shallow and skinny model. "Deb's soul is in Jane's body," says the actress. The polar opposites have to find a way to coexist. The premise pro- vides a steady stream of humor and pathos. Even after she was cast, Elliott tried to keep her enthusi- asm curbed. "I had very few expectations, probably because I didn't know the TV world that well," she says. "Plus I had people say, 'Well, pilots rarely go to series.' I figured I'd go do the pilot and be back in New York in a month." Not only did "Drop Dead Diva" get picked up, it was an instant hit for Lifetime. The recent debut of the third season notched 2.9 million viewers against some very stiff compe- tition on cable, including the season finales of "Game of Thrones" and "The Killing." "When I started this role, I really wanted to make sure that Deb/Jane had a great sense of humor," says Elliott. "I want- ed her to be able to laugh at herself. And I wanted her to have a really big heart." Maybe it's "DDD's" themes of identity and personal transformation. Maybe it's the show's broad comedic streak. Or maybe it's the random song-and-dance numbers, but "Diva's" been able to pull an illustrious and eclectic parade of guest stars, including Liza Minnelli, Tim Gunn, Rosie O'Donnell, Clay Aiken, Wendy Williams, LeAnn Rimes and Jennifer Tilly. The series appeals to both genders, although men were reluctant to admit their allegiance. "In the beginning, I would hear, 'Cool show. My wife makes me watch it' or 'My girlfriend has it on in the back- ground,'" says Elliott.
