The opening game of pool play against Clackamas and Moun- tain View Little League still had its nail biting moments for the Northern California champs, for those in attendance at Jay Little- ton Ball Park and those follow- ing back home in Tehama County through streaming stat services and social media. Despite Corning's 15-and 16-year-old boys' early 5-0 lead Oregon slowly rallied back and tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth. But Corning would take advan- tage of some of the eight Oregon errors to regain the lead in the top of the fifth. Isaiah Jones reached on an er- ror then moved to second on a Wyatt Haydon sacrifice bunt. Another error moved Jones to third and he eventually scored on a Michael Wold sacrifice fly to right field to give Corning a 7-6 lead. Corning behind pitcher Chance Nelson would hold that lead en- tering the final frame in the sev- enth inning. It was then that Corning would get what would turn out to be cru- cial insurance runs. Nelson opened up the inning with a single, stole second and eventually scored when Devin Wunsch put the ball in play result- ing in yet another Oregon error. Following a Jones sacrifice bunt Wunsch would score him- self on a Haydon bunt single. Corning would proceed to load the bases and made the game 10-6 when Noah Miller was hit by a pitch to force Haydon home. But Clackamas, which is return- ing to the West Regional for a sec- ond straight year, wasn't through. They struck for two runs to cut the game to 10-8 and had the ty- ing run come to the plate before Wunsch induced a fly out to cen- ter field to end it. Corning has a day off before they face Nevada state champion Mountain Ridge Little League 6 p.m. Thursday. Corning will play four pool games with the top two teams in the five-team group advancing to the semifinals. From there a single-elimina- tion tournament will determine the West Region's representative to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. Corning built up their lead when Nelson led off the game with a single, before stealing second. He scored a couple of batters later when Jones hit an RBI single. Haydon followed by driving home Wunsch and Jones. Errors would eventually lead to Trent Conoly scoring a fourth run and Corning capped the inning when Miller drove home Brady Meeds. Oregon scored two in the bot- tom half of the first inning to make it 5-2. Wunsch reached base in the second inning on a walk, he stole second and scored on another RBI single by Jones to extend Corn- ing's lead to 6-2 at the time. Oregon scored twice in the bot- tom of the second and fourth in- nings to tie the game midway through. Haydon finished with three RBIs for Corning, Jones and Miller each drove in two. Nelson, Jones and Haydon each had two hits. Matt Schaub is showing signs that last year's disastrous season in Houston might have been an aberration as he looks in complete command as Oakland's starter. The performance comes in stark contrast to what happened with Matt Flynn last summer. Acquired to be the starter in the offseason, Flynn lacked the nec- essary arm strength in training camp and ultimately lost his job to Terrelle Pryor before getting cut early in the season. Despite the presence of big- armed rookie Derek Carr, Schaub is showing no signs of giving up the starting position with the Raiders.
