Then, it started again and only aired two episodes and stopped again. — Alice Crawford, Elgin, Ill. A : The ABC drama about real- life spy Aldrich Ames (played by Paul Rhys) probably would have surprised many if it had been a breakout hit, but it fell well short of that ... to the degree that the network moved fairly quickly to replace it last winter. A summer Saturday slot was as- signed to the remaining episodes, and even though the show got another couple of tries there, the rat- ings were so low (and that's saying something for typically low-rated Sat- urdays) that ABC pulled the remain- ing four episodes from primetime. They'll be played off this Sunday afternoon and next, two episodes at a time. Q : I'm a big fan of The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore. Where did he start? — Sue Kelly, Buffalo, N.Y. A : Somewhat amazingly, his en- tire professional life has been spent right where he is now. He graduated from college in 1986, The Weather Channel gave him a job that summer, and the rest is history that continues to develop every time there's a major atmospheric event in the United States. Cantore earned his stripes again earlier this month by placing himself right in the line of fire of Hurricane Arthur on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Q : I'm surprised that the Robin Williams series "The Crazy Ones" wasn't renewed. Why wasn't it? — Jeff Finch, Pasadena, Md. A : The CBS sitcom had a strong start last fall, leaving NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show" to play catch- up for the rest of its run when the two series debuted head-to-head. The ratings began to trail off after that, but a number of other factors went into whether it would get a Season 2. A major one simply was the price tag. Williams and Sarah Michelle Gel- lar are stars who command hefty pay- checks, and the behind-the-scenes talent wasn't cheap, either ... par- ticularly executive producer David E. Kelley ("Ally McBeal," "The Practice"). At a certain point, a network has to look at a show's performance history and determine whether it makes eco- nomic sense to continue with it. Also, there was a lot of new-com- edy development at CBS for this season, so the prospects for "The Crazy Ones" had to be stacked up against the potential of newcomers. That's also why "Friends With Better Lives" and "Bad Teacher" got their pink slips, though each had only a handful of airings by the time the de- cisions for next season were made.
