ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter SACRAMENTO Corning Little League's Senior baseball team is in the midst of a magical run through the All-Star season. The 15- and 16-year-old team was scheduled to play Wednes- day night in the winner's bracket semifinal at the North- ern California state champion- ships behind held at American River College. With a potential two more wins Corning could become state champs and head to the Western Regional to battle it out for a shot at the Little League Se- nior World Series. The team is largely made up of players who were on Corn- ing Union High School's junior varsity baseball team this past spring. That team went 17-5 and fin- ished second in the Northern Athletic League behind Yreka. For the Corning All-Stars' first game at the district level, they faced a team from Yreka, like themselves largely made up of JV players. Yreka got the better of them, but Corning marched on through the loser's bracket to reach the championship and a rematch. In the first championship game, Corning trailed by two runs in the seventh inning, but managed to get two across the plate and force extra in- nings. Corning scored in the eighth and held on for the win. That led to a winner-take-all third game with Yreka. Corning won and it was off to the section tournament. "Pitching has been keep- ing us in the games and we've been finding a way to score in the end — just being that pest that won't go away," coach Evan White said. Corning went on to win the section title and arrived in Sac- ramento to open up the state tournament Sunday against Oakland. White said Corning went into that first game not knowing what to expect, but the players soon realized the pressure was on the big city team not to lose to the small town. White said his players don't fall apart when they get down, they keep their heads up and keep playing. Corning won 4-3. More important was their next game against Granada, which Corning won 3-1 to not only book a spot in the winner's bracket semifinal, but earn a much needed rest day. Corning was scheduled to play Rocklin on Wednesday. Oakland was meeting Granada in an elimination game. The Associated Press SANTA CLARA For anyone fig- uring Vernon Davis has some catching up to do during train- ing camp, quarterback Colin Kaepernick has no concerns. The star tight end joined the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday after sitting out the offseason program and mandatory minicamp hoping for a new contract. "It feels great!" Davis said in a text message. "I miss these guys." Teammate C.J. Spillman first posted video of Davis' ar- rival in the locker room. "Always great to have Ver- non on the field. He looks good, excited to have him back out here," Kaepernick said. "Ver- non's a Pro Bowl tight end. He's one of the best in the league. There's not going to be too much of a fall off for him. I don't think anyone's concerned about that. We're just happy he's here." Right guard Alex Boone was still a no-show as ex- pected while he also seeks a deal with two years remain- ing on his contract, just like Davis. The 49ers, who lost in the NFC championship game to Seattle, hold their first full practice today. The 30-year-old Davis, who had 52 catches last season and matched his career high with 13 touchdowns, typically takes about a month off following the season before he starts train- ing again full-time. Bumgarner (12-7) gave up five hits while striking out six and walking none in a pitchers' duel with A.J. Burnett. It was the sixth win in seven games for first-place San Fran- cisco, which moved two games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodg- ers in the NL West. The Giants will look to sweep the four-game series today. One night after blowing just his third save in 26 chances, closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-2) took the loss. The Associated Press NAPA Shortly after checking in a day before the Oakland Raid- ers begin training camp, Charles Woodson packed his family into a white SUV for a quick afternoon drive. Ten years ago, the veteran safety held out for 33 days in search of a new contract. It was the only time during his NFL ca- reer that Woodson held out, and although he didn't land the lucra- tive deal he had hoped for, Wood- son did have one of his most pro- ductive seasons in Oakland. A brash 27-year-old at the time, Woodson regularly joked after- ward that he might not show up on time for camp again. Woodson laughed at that recol- lection while holding his 3-year- old son in his arms before plac- ing him in a car seat Wednesday. "It's a change," said Woodson, now married and a father of two. "Definitely a change — for the bet- ter." An eight-time Pro Bowl pick, Woodson's role with the Raid- ers has also changed from what it was during his first tour with the team.
