Burrell, Rowand lead Giants in Game 1 CHICAGO (AP) — Pat Burrell and Aaron Rowand each drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 13-7 on Tuesday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Giants’ offensive outburst surpassed their sea- son high of 12 runs, which they set at St. Louis on June 2. They also stretched their winning streak to six games. Burrell had three hits, scored two runs and home- red. Rowand had two hits, scored twice and hit a three- run double. Ryan Vogelsong (6-1) got the win despite allowing a season-high six runs — three earned — and matched his high for the sea- son with four walks in five innings. Cubs starter Doug Davis (1-7) left after just 4 1- 3 innings, allowing 12 hits, 10 runs and walking three. Carlos Pena hit a two-run homer, walked and scored two runs for the Cubs. Blake DeWitt had two singles and three RBIs, and Koyie Hill added a solo homer for Chicago. San Francisco jumped on Davis early, starting with Rowand’s walk to lead off the game and Miguel Teja- da’s single. Rowand scored on Aubrey Huff’s soft single to right-center, diving into the plate to barely beat the throw by Cubs center fielder Tony Campana. Cody Ross singled to load the bases, meaning that the first four Giants had reached base. Davis recovered to get Pablo Sandoval to roll into a dou- ble play, which scored Teja- da. Burrell tacked on a run with a two-out single. The first-inning tally against Davis read: three runs, four hits, 24 pitches and a potentially long day for the Cubs’ bullpen. Vogelsong, who entered with a 1.86 ERA, hadn’t allowed more than two runs since he gave up five against the Mets on May 3 — a span of nine starts. The Cubs topped that in the second inning. Red Bluff and Corning are scheduled to resume play today with both teams still alive in the winner’s bracket. Red Bluff takes on Cottonwood and Corning faces East Redding. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m. starts at Caldwell Park in Redding. Corning has reached the championship after beating Foothill 8-2. Having reached the final through the winner’s bracket, Corning would have to lose twice not to become District 1 champions. The championship’s first game is slated for Thursday. Corning is scheduled to play East Redding today at 6 p.m. in the loser’s bracket at Mt. Shasta. Corning lost its opener 5-3 to West Redding. Red Bluff was battling Cottonwood Tuesday night in an elimination game. The winner advances to play Central Tehama at 6 p.m., Thursday. Central Tehama stayed alive in the loser’s brack- et by beating East Redding 3-1, Monday. Corning faces Anderson today at 6 p.m. in a winner’s bracket semifinal. Giants take night cap, extend win streak to 7 CHICAGO (AP) — Barry Zito threw seven strong innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Tuesday night for a sweep of a day-night double- header. Zito (1-1) pitched for the first time since leaving his start on April 16 with a right foot sprain. He allowed four hits and two runs, leading the Giants to their seventh straight win. Brian Wilson got his 24th save. Nate Schierholtz had three hits and two RBIs to pace the San Francisco offense, and Brandon Crawford added two hits and two RBIs. Rodrigo Lopez (0-2) — pressed into starting duty after throwing out of the bullpen for most of the season — allowed eight hits and four runs in 4 2-3 innings for the Cubs. Lou Montanez hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, who were held to five hits. Aramis Ramirez also homered for Chicago. Zito was sharp early, striking out Reed Johnson to start the game and retiring first six Cubs. Alfonso Soriano led off the third inning with a single. Montanez followed with his first Cubs homer — 11 years and 22 days after he was drafted by the team in the first round of the 2000 draft. Montanez had four big league homers during his time with the Orioles in 2008 and 2009, but he played 1,076 games in the minors after being selected by the Cubs. His blast to left put the Cubs up 2-1. Zito shut down the Cubs after Montanez’s homer for his longest outing since August 6, 2010. The Giants scored in the second when Cody Ross led off with a double and scored on Schierholtz’s single.
