F CUSOn Recycling Will Be Picked Up July 4 Holiday recycling service for citizens in Fayetteville will begin this July. Residents of Fayetteville who normally receive recycling and garbage collection on Monday will receive recycling collection on July 4 and garbage collection on July 5. Yard waste collection will skip a week to July 11. City Wins All-America City Award After a spirited, patriotic presentation June 16 that featured marching, singing soldiers from the 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus, the City of Fayetteville was selected June 17 in Kansas City as an All-America City Award winner for the third time in its history. A delegation of and children, described to a panel how Fayetteville has shed its former “Fayettenam” image and became a cleaner, thriving community with a strong economy. “We’re thrilled to win this award,” Mayor Tony Chavonne said. “Everyone delivered and the 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus conveyed the heart and soul of our community. I am so proud of our delegation and excited that our city is an All-America City for the third time. So much hard work went into winning and it really paid off.” Fayetteville’s presentation focused on its strong economy, great housing market, how the community addressed literacy through the Cumberland County Schools’ Reading Rocks! program and the community’s solid ties with the military. Also discussed was how Fayetteville responded to changes from BRAC. continued next page “We’re happy that Fayetteville citizens will no longer have to wait a week for their recycling to be collected this Independence Day,” said Jerry Dietzen, city environmental services director. “This is a service we’re pleased to provide and a convenience to our customers.” In order to remind citizens to roll their recycling cans to the curb, signs are being posted near neighborhoods that were formerly missed on holidays. Waste Management is the City’s recycling contractor. Chalmers Pool and the Splash Pad are closed July 4 and will reopen July 5. Transit buses will operate on regular schedules. Disaster Registration Cool Off at Chalmers Pool and Splash Pad The timing couldn’t be better to visit Chalmers Pool, Fayetteville’s only public pool. Operated by Fayetteville- Cumberland Parks & Recreation, Chalmers Pool opened Memorial Day. The pool, located across from Fayetteville State University on Langdon Street at Seabrook Park, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., through Labor Day, Sept. 5. Memorial Day and Labor Day are the only two Mondays that the pool is open. Admission to Chalmers Pool is $1 for children 12 and under and $2 for visitors ages 13 and up. Deadline Extended The disaster assistance deadline for Fayetteville citizens, who were affected by the April 16 tornadoes, has been extended to Tuesday, July 5. To register for FEMA disaster assistance, call 800-621-FEMA (3362). TTY 800-462-7585 is for deaf and hard-of-hearing callers. Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation also offers the Splash Pad during warmer months. The Splash Pad opened May 14, giving citizens an outdoor aquatic venue to visit prior to the pool’s opening. Located at 500 Fisher St. at Christina Smith Park, the Splash Pad allows residents to cool off as water sprinkles from a rainbow of colored arches. Onlookers can relax under the shaded tables near the Splash Pad. The Splash Pad is free and open to all ages through Sept.17. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. when school is in session, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. when school is out for the summer.
