LAURENTCIPRIANI—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Stage winner from Australia Michael Rogers (third right) climbs with the breakaway group during the 16th stage of the Tour de France cycling race Tuesday. ByJameyKeaten TheAssociatedPress BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, FRANCE The Pyrenees on Tuesday lived up to their reputation for causing ups and downs at the Tour de France: A French rider climbed in the stand- ings, an American went down, and an Australian rebounding from an ordeal of doping suspicions won Stage 16 in a downhill breakaway. Riding in his 10th Tour, three-time world champion Michael Rogers of Australia won his first Tour stage be- hind savvy racing, well-paced riding and the absence of his Tinkoff-Saxo Bank leader Alberto Contador. The Spaniard crashed out in Stage 10, in- advertently freeing up Rogers to go after the stage win. Race leader Vincenzo Nibali was still descending from the day's big- gest climb, the Porte de Bales, as Rog- ers crossed and finished 8 minutes later. But the Italian looks even more likely to win the three-week race on Sunday after keeping pace with pos- sible contenders for the yellow jer- sey, and gaining time on two others. One of the laggards was Tejay van Garderen. Unable to keep pace on the Port de Bales, the 25-year-old Amer- ican was more than 3 minutes af- ter Nibali. Van Garderen only slipped a spot in the standings, to sixth, but the gap to the rider ahead of him grew. The other laggard was France's Romain Bardet, who finished nearly two minutes back of Nibali. Thibaut Pinot, however, kept pace with Nibali and replaced Bardet as France's top podium hopeful: He rose to third. For the second straight year, the race's entree to the Pyrenees has dented Van Garderen's podium am- bitions. "It's definitely disappointing," the American said outside his BMC team bus. "I had high hopes for a podium and now it looks like it's taken a big hit ... I just didn't have the legs, I felt a bit empty." "I'm just hoping I can bounce back and have a better day tomorrow." The Warriors announced Rush's signing Tuesday. The contract is for two years and about $2.5 million. Rush will hold the option in the second year of the deal. Rush was Golden State's top re- serve and best perimeter defender during the 2011-12 season before tearing two ligaments in his left knee in the team's 2012-13 home opener. He was traded to Utah last summer as part of a salary- shedding move. Rush played just 38 games for the Jazz after returning from that devastating knee injury. He has averaged 8.3 points and 3.3 re- bounds in six seasons. NBA Warriors announce Rush's signing Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton was chosen preseason offensive player of the year in the Mountain West Conference media vote, and Fresno State safety Derron Smith took defensive honors. Close to 900 swimmers from 31 teams competed at the cham- pionship meet over the weekend, which featured trials and finals each of the four days of the meet. The top eight swimmers in each event swam in finals in the evening and were all guaranteed a medal. Three of the eight swimmers from the Red Bluff SOAR team qualified for finals and two of the 8-and-under swimmers earned medals, as there were not finals for that age group. Leading the way was Jaxon Balken, who captured three fifth- place AA finishes in the 50-meter backstroke, the 100-meter back- stroke and the 200-meter back- stroke. Balken also earned a sev- enth-place medal in the 400-me- ter individual medley. With that fast swim, Brandt also broke the SOAR team record, previously held by sister Julia Brandt. In the 50-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter breaststroke Jayne Brandt brought home sixth- place medals. Julia Brandt collected a sev- enth-place medal in the 100-me- ter butterfly, swimming a swift 1:09.15, which was a new AAA time and a Western Zone Qual- ifying Time as well.
