2B Daily News – Tuesday, June 28, 2011 FEATURES Previous planning pesters Dear Annie: I’m a young woman who is living at home for the sum- mer before moving away in the fall. Here’s my dilemma: Several months ago, I excitedly arranged for my long-distance boyfriend to live with my family and get work nearby. Unfortunately, now that he’s here, I find that I simply don’t want to be in a rela- tionship with him anymore. He hasn’t done anything wrong. I’m Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar just a different person from who I was a couple of years ago when we began dating. Now his little flaws that I so desperately convinced myself to over- look seem increasingly like deal break- ers. I’m planning to give the relationship a few more weeks to make sure this isn’t simply a phase, but frankly, I don’t expect my feelings to change. How do I handle this? I realize that hurting him is inevitable, but breaking up with him in the middle of the summer and mak- ing him move out of my parents’ home could seriously undermine his efforts to pay for his own education. What’s even worse is that my friends and family are putting serious effort into accepting him into the fami- ly because they expect us to get mar- LOSE Continued from Page 1B three major champi- onships include Wimbledon in 2004. After a day off, the men play their quarterfinals Wednesday. In addition to Nadal vs. Fish — assuming Nadal decides to play after getting an MRI exam on his foot — the matchups are No. 2 Novak Djokovic vs. Tomic; No. 3 Federer vs. No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; and No. 4 Murray vs. unseeded Feliciano Lopez. ‘‘I’m worried, for sure,’’ ried. I hate that they may form an attachment to someone I am now plan- ning to break up with. I want to do the right thing and cause the least possible amount of hurt. Please help me, Annie. — Hearts Don’t Break Even Dear Hearts: Don’t worry about your friends and relatives. They will manage. But you do need to talk to your boyfriend as soon as possible and explain that the relationship isn’t going to work out. Some pain cannot be avoided, so better now than later. Be as gentle as possible. Apologize for uprooting him. And, since his liveli- hood is currently dependent on his liv- ing arrangements, it would be gracious if your parents would allow him to stay temporarily while he looks for a place of his own. Offer to help him search. The fact that you are moving away in the fall will make this easier on both of you. Dear Annie: I hope you will print my pet peeve so retailers will take notice. No matter where I shop, no one knows how to properly give change. If I pay $20 for a $15.95 purchase, the change is handed to me in a pile of coins, bills and a receipt. I have to fum- ble to count it. I cashiered many years ago. I would give the customer the nickel, saying, ‘‘And five cents makes 16,’’ and then count out the remaining four dollars, saying, ‘‘Seventeen, 18, 19, 20.’’ Most cashiers today can’t add or subtract without the register to do the thinking Nadal said. Neither of the women who beat the Williams sis- ters Monday has won a Grand Slam title, although Bartoli did reach the Wim- bledon final in 2007 — before losing to Venus. Pironkova, meanwhile, pro- duced her best Grand Slam showing at the All England Club a year ago, when she made it to the semifinals by beating Venus — coinciden- tally, also by the score of 6- 2, 6-3. Pironkova also beat Venus at the 2006 Australian Open, yet somehow she clearly didn’t make much of an impression on Mom. ‘‘I don’t even remember for them. In addition, when the transac- tion is complete, I am told cheerfully, ‘‘Have a good one.’’ Have a good what? Whatever happened to a simple, ‘‘Thank you, and please come again’’? And last but not least, why is the receipt so long? Imagine how much paper could be saved if they skipped the surveys and advertising. — Inger from N.H. who Hates To Shop Dear Inger: One function of this column is to allow the readers to let off a little steam now and then. Hope you feel better. Dear Annie: The letter from ‘‘Dis- appointed Grandmother’’ reminded me of a story I heard many years ago. Two elderly ladies were talking about gifts given to the grandchildren. Esther lamented that she had sent money to each of her grandchildren for Christ- mas and didn’t get a single thank-you note. Paula proudly said, ‘‘Every one of my grandchildren came personally to thank me for their gift.’’ At the look on Esther’s face, Paula simply smiled and said, ‘‘I didn’t sign the checks.’’ — Michigan Grandma Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. They said she lost to her here a year ago,’’ Price said. ‘‘I did- n’t remember the girl. I’ll remember her this time.’’ As well she should, because Pironkova befud- dles the older Williams sis- ter. On Monday, Pironkova played steadily, making only 10 unforced errors, half as many as Venus. ‘‘Today’s match proba- bly looked easier on the out- side, but it took me enor- mous amount of power to beat her,’’ Pironkova said. ‘‘I kept pushing her. As I said, I played well. So she proba- bly got a little shaky, and I took over.’’ MLB West Division Texas East Division American League WL Pct GB 41 38 .519 — Seattle 39 39 .500 1.5 Angels 39 40 .494 2 A’s 35 44 .443 6 WL Pct GB New York 45 31 .592 — Boston 45 32 .584 .5 Tampa Bay 44 35 .557 2.5 Toronto 39 40 .494 7.5 Baltimore 35 40 .467 9.5 Central Division WL Pct GB Detroit 43 36 .544 — Cleveland 40 36 .526 1.5 Chicago 38 41 .481 5 Kansas City 33 45 .423 9.5 Minnesota 32 44 .421 9.5 West Division National League WL Pct GB GIANTS 44 34 .564 — Arizona 43 36 .544 1.5 Colorado 38 40 .487 6 Los Angeles35 44 .443 9.5 San Diego 34 45 .430 10.5 East Division WL Pct GB Philadelphia 49 30 .620 — Atlanta 44 35 .557 5 Washington 40 38 .513 8.5 New York 39 39 .500 9.5 Florida 34 44 .436 14.5 Central Division WL Pct GB Milwaukee 44 35 .557 — St. Louis 41 38 .519 3 Cincinnati 41 39 .513 3.5 Pittsburgh 39 38 .506 4 Chicago 32 46 .410 11.5 Houston 28 51 .354 16 ————————————————— Monday’s results Chicago 7, Colorado 3 Cincinnati 5, Tampa Bay 0 Detroit 4, Toronto 2 Atlanta at Seattle, late Cleveland at Arizona, late Kansas City at San Diego, late L.A. GOTT: I suffered anaphylactic shock from hazelnuts and was advised not to eat any kind of nuts. Does this include palm oil, cocoa, pure maple syrup and coconut? It is hard enough to find pow- dered mixes without the facilities also pro- cessing nuts there. I also became very sick (vom- ited) after eating clams, so should I now avoid them and other types of shellfish? Thank you for any help you can give me. Dr. Peter Gott gy and what, if any, other sub- stances you may be allergic to. You are now responsible for thoroughly checking labels on any foods, condiments and beverages you consume, as tree nuts can be found DEAR READER: Let’s start with the clams, as this is the simplest question to answer. While you may have experienced an allergic reac- tion, it is more likely that you developed food poisoning from eating bad clams. An allergy to shellfish often includes swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips, throat and/or face — not simply vomiting. Now to your tree nut allergy. Tree nuts include hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, almonds and Brazil nuts. Sufferers are typically told to avoid peanuts (a legume, not a nut), as well, because of the potential for cross-contami- nation at processing facilities and a possible co-allergy. Cocoa, or rather, cacao, is not a nut, but is the fruit of the cacao tree. Chocolate is made from the seeds of this fruit. Coconut, while classi- fied as a tree nut by the FDA, is not a true nut, but rather a drupe (a specific type of fruit). Pure maple syrup is derived from the sap of the maple tree. Finally, palm oil is made from the fruit of palm trees. As you can see, these substances are not tree nuts, so you are not likely allergic to them. Because you devel- oped anaphylactic shock, you were likely rushed to the emergency room, but you should have been told to see an allergist for testing and further treatment. If you were not, your hospital failed to take appropriate steps toward helping you with this condition. If you were told but simply didn’t go, you must do so now. If you are already under the care of an allergist, you should have asked your questions during the initial visit. You should also under- go allergy testing to deter- mine the extent of your aller- GOLF World Golf Ranking 1. Luke Donald ENG 9.14 2. Lee Westwood ENG 8.66 3. Rory McIlroy NIR 4. GOTT: When you respond to a question and refer to their doctor as “he or she,” why don’t you just say, “Your doctor will tell you what ‘they’ want you to do,” instead of “he or she”? I love your column. I have gotten other people (note that I didn’t have to say gender specific) to read you, too! DEAR READER: The simple answer is grammar. “They” is used when talking about more than one individ- ual. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense that an individ- ual (one person) can give “their” (more than one per- son) suggestions on a matter. I am a stickler for gram- mar, but in today’s society, this trait seems to have fallen by the wayside. Just because many people incorrectly say or write something most of the time, doesn’t mean that it is any less wrong. Dr. Peter H.
