Local landlords protect their tenants from secondhand smoke Several Tehama County landlords have been teaming up with Public Health staff to protect their tenants from the dangers of secondhand smoke. They and their residents are reaping the benefits from this col- laboration. Over 84 percent of California adults do not smoke. Most Californians are aware of the health hazards of secondhand smoke and wish to be protected from it. However, many apartment owners are not aware that they have a right to designate all or part of an apartment building or com- plex as smoke-free. Smoke-free apartments are less costly to maintain and may be cheaper to insure. Tenants in both subsi- dized and market-rate housing deserve to be protected from expo- sure to secondhand smoke. According to the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resource Board, a smoker’s home may have nico- tine levels that are on average 30 times higher than a non-smok- er’s home. This exposure is especially dangerous for young children and babies, and can cause many physical problems as they grow up. Traditionally, tenants have been allowed to smoke in their apart- ments or in common areas. Times have changed, and everyone now acknowledges that smoking is hazardous not only to the smoker’s health but to the health of those breathing in the secondhand smoke. What are landlords in Tehama County doing to protect their tenants from secondhand smoke? They are protecting tenants by prohibiting smoking in common areas and individual rental units. Tehama County Health Services Agency, Public Health Divi- sion, Tobacco Education Program extends a big thank you and congratulations to Meadow Vista Apartments, Creekside Village Apartments, Salado Orchard Apartments, Tehama Village Apart- ments, Cabernet Apartments, Corning West Apartments and Tehama Estates for protecting their tenants from the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke. These apartment complexes have taken the plunge to volun- tarily adopt a smoke-free policy, providing 50-100 percent of units completely smoke-free. If you are interested in more information on how you can pro- vide smoke-free housing to your tenants, please contact Susan Murphy at the Tehama County Health Services Agency, Public Health Division (530) 527-6824.
