ALPHA CHI OMEGA 3 A lpha Chi Omega has a strong tradition of developing leaders at Kansas State University. Our members' influence is seen in the top organizations on campus and in the classroom. Their experience allows them to take those skills and become leaders in their career field. A great example of this is Elizabeth Day Hochberg '94, who after graduating from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a master's degree in piano performance, decided to attend law school at the University of New Hampshire School of Law's Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property. Elizabeth is now a member of the U.S. General Services Administration's Office of General Counsel where she focuses on social media and technology law. She is one of few professional lawyers specializing in this area. Her responsibilities include negotiating terms of service agreements and figuring out how the federal government can use the newest technology to deliver their services to citizens. She is active in her professional field serving as lead counsel to the Presidential Innovation Fellows, the Digital Services Innovation Center, Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technology, and several government websites. In addition to her legal work, Elizabeth has also published two books on intellectual property law and has released two CDs of classical piano music. She lives in Washington, D.C. After years of babysitting and listening to them talk about the sorority, she decided to go out for recruitment. "I've always tried my very best at anything I commit to, and I just loved being an Alpha Chi. I've been involved with alumnae clubs, advisory boards, and House Corporations for all but three years (when I lived in Dodge City) since graduating in 1963." As a collegian, Virginia enjoyed the process of work and rush week, especially the skits. "I was everything from an Easter bunny to a cat. Formal dinners were also favorites of mine as an undergraduate. Our house director (who always looked like she just stepped out of a fashion magazine) showed us the proper way to act and eat at formal gatherings. All dances and formal events were held at the house, with dancing in the dining room. Since I was a 'townie,' I don't have the live-in memories others may have, but it was still a great experience that I cherish to this day." As an alumna, Virginia continues to make Alpha Chi memories. In 2012, she attended convention in St. Louis and received her 50-year pin. "Although it was more like 52 years at the time, it was still an honor to receive it from the national president." She recently received a Kansas State Alpha Chi quilt from House Director June Wilson, who made it thanks to the Gamma Zeta Chapter women who contributed the tee shirts. "It's such a beautiful memento; I use it all the time." Now that she is retired, Virginia spends her time doing numerous activities in and around the Manhattan area, such as water aerobics, lunches with friends, embroidery, attending antique auctions, watching black and white movies from the '30s and '40s, and taking day trips with a senior group touring different areas of Kansas or going to dinner and mystery theaters. She is an active volunteer, working with Hospice, Senior Center, Seven Dolors, Budget Shop, RSVP, Chamber of Commerce, and anywhere else they need help. She also enjoys spending time visiting her family when she can, and working with the Gamma Zeta House Corporation. "I've been the treasurer for forever!" You can contact Virginia at vjjoyce@cox.net.
