2B Daily News – Monday, June 20, 2011 FEATURES Machiavellian man miffs mate Natural remedies abound for wart removal Dear Annie: I dated "Tony" for a year before we mar- ried two years ago. I thought I knew him, but shortly after the wedding, I discovered that everything about him was a lie. This included falsehoods about his financial situation, his family, his ex-wife, his children and his jobs. He lied about little things, big things, every- thing. I have lost all trust in him. When I ask Tony why he deceived me, he goes into defense mode and says he did it to protect himself. He claims I only care about the money. I feel trapped with a man I don't know. Tony's family realizes that we are having problems, but they are unaware of the lies. It would break their hearts. (He had me feeling sorry for him when he told me they were abusive -- more lies.) Should I stay or walk away? I care about Tony, but I am not in love with him any longer. -- Married to a Fabricator Dear Married: If Tony is a pathological liar, he needs therapy, but that works only if he recognizes the problem and is willing to get help. Offer him the Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar opportunity to see a professional with experience in this area. If he refuses, we see no future for this relationship. Dear Annie: I am married to a nocturnal ninja. "Ralph" is quite active while sleep- ing. He flails about and kicks and punches. I'm a fair- ly sound sleeper, and we have a large bed, so until recently, this was only a minor annoyance. However, while chang- ing the bedding today, I dis- covered that Ralph has been ripping our expensive sheets to shreds with his toenails. Apparently the fabric had been worn thin from his nighttime dream marathons and kickboxing tourna- ments. When I showed Ralph the sheets, he blamed the cat, but I assure you, no housecat could have caused this kind of damage. Ralph's toenails are properly clipped, so I'm at a loss as to how to handle this. -- Mar- ried to Edward Scissorfeet Dear Married: (We love your signature.) Ralph could be suffering from parasomnia, a category of sleep disorders, and specifi- cally, one that allows the sleeper to act out his dreams. It most commonly occurs in men over 50. You are lucky Ralph only tore the sheets. Some sufferers unintentionally cause harm to themselves or their part- ners. Please urge Ralph to discuss this possibility with his doctor and, if necessary, get a referral to a sleep clin- ic for testing and appropri- ate treatment. Otherwise, we strongly recommend separate bedrooms. And sturdier sheets. Dear Annie: I read the letter from "Heartbroken in Canada," whose children ignore her on Mother's Day. It moved me to tears. I have not spoken to my mother for a year and haven't seen her for two. Mom has always been very reserved, but in the past few years, she has become mean and hateful. Every commu- nication turns into an excuse to criticize me. Forgiveness is a foreign concept to her. My mother is 83 and widowed and often avoids people. I worry about her constantly, but I can't call 911 every time she refuses to speak to me. Right now, she can handle her own affairs, but that could change at any time. -- Heart- broken in Nebraska Dear Nebraska: Your mother sounds difficult. Per- haps if you sent her this let- ter, it would help. And you can call Adult Protective Services. DEAR DR. GOTT: I saw your article about the person who had a wart removed by rubbing chalk on it. I had a wart on my hand for seven years. Then I started teach- ing, using a blackboard and chalk. A couple of months later, I noticed the wart was getting smaller and eventually it disap- peared forever. My family and friends laughed when I told them I thought it was chalk dust that did it. I’m happy to see someone else agrees with my very unscientific conclusion. board, dampen an aspirin with water and place this mixture over the wart. Remember not to choose the latter remedy if you have an allergy to aspirin. Both remedies may require repeat treatment for several days to become effective. Dr. Peter Gott DEAR READER: The white chalk you use in your classroom is generally made from calcium carbonate, a processed form of natural limestone. This chemical compound, found in rocks around the world, is used for many pur- poses, such as a dietary supplement. It is commonly used as an over-the-counter antacid. Calcium is required for healthy bones, muscles, the nervous system and the heart. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the calcium carbonate dries the lesion, much as any liquid “coating” would. Once air is prevented from reach- ing the finger or area where the wart is present, the lack of necessary oxygen causes the wart to disappear. Readers who would like additional and rather unusual remedies for wart removal might consider the following: — Cover the lesion with clear nail polish to create an airtight seal. Repeat the process for several days, when the wart should wash off with soap and water. Or try Tang and a Band-Aid. Sim- ply mix the Tang with a small amount of water to form a paste. Put the paste over the wart and cover it with a Band-Aid. If you don’t have any Tang in your cup- — Apply undiluted tea tree oil directly to a wart several times a day until the wart disap- pears. — Consider Elmer’s or a similar type of glue to cover a wart. Peel the glue off after it dries and repeat the process up to three times a day until the wart disappears. — Rub a wart against the inside of a raw potato several times a day for at least two weeks. — Warm castor oil dabbed over a wart two or three times a day and covered with an adhesive bandage has been found effective. Again, repeat the process until satisfactory results occur. — If you have dandelions growing in your back yard or a field, crush a stem until the “milk” appears. Rub the milk over the wart several times a day until the wart disappears. — Crush raw garlic and dilute or blend it with vitamin C from a capsule supplement. Apply it to the wart and cover with a bandage for 24 hours. Remove the adhesive and wash the area with warm soap and water. A blister will likely form, but the wart should fall off in about a week. I could go on, but enough is enough. As you might imagine, it appears almost anything can be tried to remove warts, which are caused by a virus that enters the body through cracks in the skin. Warts can spread, so avoid irritating them through picking or scratching.
