Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to end abruptly fol- lowed by sunshine along the mid-Atlantic coast but will carry on into the night over eastern Long Island and part of New England. Seas will build in the coastal Northeast and will remain rough along the southern Atlantic coast. While clouds and spotty showers are in the offing for the eastern Great Lakes, sunshine, cooler air and low humidity are forecast for much of the South. There had been no word of the track star and former Olym- pian since his World War II bomber crashed into the Pa- cificOcean.Themilitarytold hisparentshewasdead, and an annual collegiate track competition named one of its races in his memory. But Zamperini was alive, and very much so. After surviving 47 days in a life raft in shark-infested waters and enduring two years as a Japanese pris- oner of war, Zamperini was liberated in time to attend the second running of the invitational mile that had been named in his mem- ory. It was a story fitting for a man who lived a life on the edge of endurance, an ordinary man who did extraordinary things — all while sustained by a hope and strength that at times seemed superhuman. Zamperini, a war hero, Olympian and the subject of a celebrated book and upcoming movie on his harrowing story of survival against all odds, died after a long battle with pneumonia, his family said Thursday in a statement. He was 97. Zamperini outlived al- most all of those who watched him weave his way through his remarkable life. Lauren Hillenbrand, the author of the best-selling book "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Re- silience, and Redemption," said over countless hours of interviews Zamperini be- came a surrogate grand- father and beloved friend who helped her cope with her own debilitating illness, chronic fatigue syndrome. "In a life of almost un- imaginable drama, he ex- perienced supreme tri- umphs, but also brutal hardship, incomprehensi- ble suffering, and the cru- elty of his fellow man. But Louie greeted every chal- lenge of his long journey with singular resilience, determination and inge- nuity, with a ferocious will to survive and prevail, and with hope that knew no master," said Hillenbrand, whose book is being made into a movie directed by Angelina Jolie. OBITUARY War hero Zamperini dies at age 97 By Emery P. Dalesio The Associated Press RODANTHE,N.C. Hurricane Arthur gained strength in the Atlantic on Thursday and threatened to strike near the North Carolina coast on Independence Day, prompting thousands of vacationers and residents to leave parts of the state's popular but flood-prone Outer Banks. Nichole Specht, 27, and Ryan Witman, 28, had pre- loaded their Honda CRV and left Hatteras Island at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, beat- ing the expected traffic jam. The island was under an evacuation order, with no traffic allowed in. Officials asked an estimated 35,000 residents and travelers to leave through North Caro- lina Highway 12, the only road on and off Hatteras. Specht and Witman found the road wide open for their return home to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Specht said her parents left their rental later, at 5 a.m., and also found clear sailing. "We were just saying we were really, really lucky this year that the weather was so great, and then this," Specht said as she ended a two-week vacation that in- cluded scouting sites for the couple's wedding next year. Forecasters expect Ar- thur to speed up to a Cate- gory 2 storm and pass over or near the Outer Banks — a 200-mile string of narrow barrier islands with about 57,000 permanent residents — early Friday, bringing rain, heavy winds, storm surge and dangerous rip currents. Category 2 hurri- canes pack winds of more than 96 mph. "We don't know for sure if the exact center of Arthur is going to pass over land or not. The chances have been increasing for that to occur with the last couple of fore- casts. But even if the exact center doesn't go over you, you will experience impacts tonight. The weather is go- ing downhill in North Caro- lina, even as we speak," said Rick Knabb, the director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Before the storm hit, tour- ism officials had expected 250,000 people to travel to the Outer Banks for the hol- iday weekend. Gov. Pat Mc- Crory sought to strike a bal- ancebetweenasternwarning to vacationers and optimism thatpartofthebusyweekend could be salvaged. On Wednesday, he warned people: "Don't put your stupid hat on." But the next day, even as the storm gathered strength, he said: "Of course, this holiday week- end, the July 4th weekend, is one of the biggest week- ends for coastal tourism in the state, and we anticipate a beautiful weekend after the Tropical Storm Arthur or the Hurricane Arthur is out of North Carolina."
