The Ultimate X Showdown is a competition that pairs barrel racing trainers from across the United States and Canada with Thoroughbred horses freshly retired from the racetrack. Smart is one of 15 trainers selected to compete this year. The trainers began their work with their horses May 28. At the Ultimate X Showdown event they will compete in a judged freestyle performance and a timed average of two barrel races. The event was conceived by Jacqueline Harris. Harris came up with the event after learning that many off-track Thoroughbreds of small stature, fewer than 16 hands, often have a harder time being placed when their racing careers are over. AAA estimates the price of gasoline has risen about 15 to 20 cents per gallon in recent weeks due to the violence in Iraq. That's pushed the national average for a gallon of gas to $3.68, the highest its been over the Fourth of July since 2008 when motorists paid an average of $4.10. "It is frustrating that events overseas will make it more ex- pensive to celebrate Fourth of July here at home," AAA spokesman Avery Ash said in a press release. AAA said it does not believe the gas prices will have a significant impact on the number of people traveling for the weekend, but that impact could be felt by trav- elers cutting back on the amount they dine, shop and pay for other activities on their trip. AAA said it predicts gas prices would stay in this range for the re- mainder of the month, although they could rise higher depending on the events in Iraq or a major hurricane. California has the highest price of gasoline among the contiguous 48 states at $4.13 per gallon. According to GasBuddy.com gas prices in Red Bluff Wednes- day ranged from $3.89 to $4.19. About 6:50 a.m. the driver of a northbound silver 1996 Toyota Camry, Jasmier Johnson of Richmond, drifted over the right shoulder rumble strip for an unknown reason, veered back over both lanes of the freeway and into a dirt center divider, and then lost control of his vehicle as he tried to steer back toward the northbound lanes, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. Johnson's vehicle then began to spin out toward the left, travelling back across traffic lanes and continuing out of control into the right dirt shoulder and overturning, according to the release. The car came to a rest on its roof. Johnson, 30, suffered major injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, according to the release. Three of his four passengers, Ernest Alexander, 31, of Richmond, Deshae Douglas, 23, of Sacramento, and Royal Douglas, 1, of Sacramento, suffered minor injuries and were taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital. A fourth passenger, 24-year- old Amber Baird of Sacramento, suffered major injuries and also was taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital. The driver and his four passengers were wearing their seat belts, according to the release. Alcohol, the CHP said, was not a factor in the crash. CHP officers assisted with traffic control at the scene, and all I-5 lanes were opened about 7:30 a.m. GERBER Fiveinjuredinrollovercrash Driver in single-vehicle crash suffers major injuries Community.....A3 Opinion............A4 Life...................A5 Sports.............. Mayor Sabrina Fritz will hold a seat of honor in the July 4th parade Friday and the runners up are all vice mayors and will enjoy their place in the parade festivities. The mayor will be introduced for- mally at the Play day in the Park the afternoon of July 4. Vice mayors include Kenny Brewer, Rick Singer, Bryan Fox, Ray Thomas and Flower the dog. Local voters visited Los Molinos businesses to vote for their favorite candidates by putting money into jars with their pictures and biographies affixed. Buying votes is a long held institution of our mayor's race and the only way to win. Of course, the goal is to help the Chamber of Commerce raise money for the July 4th Parade and Play day, the town's 47th, which takes place this Fri- day, closes down part of State Route 99E, to allow 50 or more floats, antique cars and trac- tors, equestrian entrants, dec- orated bikes and more to par- ticipate. This year's parade theme is A Grand Old Flag. Best themed entry wins a big prize but there are many categories including best decorated bike. All minors in the race receive a dollar piece and a free raffle ticket toward a new bike. The chamber wishes to thank the winner, the candidates and local businesses for supporting the race, the town and the chamber.
