CityViewNC.com | 15 the sharp sensation of Laura's finger- nails digging into my arm assured me that this was no dream. We grabbed our bags and quickly walked toward the nearest stairs. He followed us, continuing to scream, "Mary, where is your luggage? Do you know who has your luggage?" At that point, we didn't know what to do. We ran towards the women's bathroom and darted inside. Our hearts raced as we tried to catch our breath and figure out our next move. irty minutes later, we peeked out to see if our stalker was still around, but apparently his desire to chase us and inquire about my luggage stopped at the bathroom door. Confident that he was no longer a problem, we hurried to catch our train. We never saw him again, and to this very day I can't figure out how he knew my name. Aer a rocky beginning, our travels in Scotland went smoothly until the day we decided to hitchhike from one small village to another. Apparently, we were on a mission to prove that our recent mishaps had taught us nothing. We stood on the side of the road for a long time, sticking our thumbs out at each approaching car, only to see it pass us by. Finally, one car began to slow down as if preparing to stop. What luck—a ride at last! Suddenly, the driver swerved onto the shoulder of the road and sped to- ward us. Only our quick reflexes saved us as we jumped into the ditch behind us. e driver, never stopping, pulled back onto the road and kept going. Lying face down in that muddy, stinking ditch, I finally realized that we needed to be more cautious travel- ers. We had spent too much of our time crawling from beneath heavy objects, running from strangers and jumping into ditches. is sort of life was meant for James Bond, but not for us. I was ready to return to the quiet life of an Oxford philosophy student. Besides, now I had a few good stories to share with my philosophy professor about my mortality.
