The grisly discov- ery culminated a feverish search that led to Israel's largest ground operation in the Palestinian terri- tory in nearly a decade and raised fears of renewed fighting with Hamas. Israeli Prime Min- ister Benjamin Netan- yahu vowed tough action. "Hamas is responsible, and Hamas will pay," he said in a statement, add- ing the teenagers "were kidnapped and murdered in cold blood by human an- imals." Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gi- lad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Fraenkel, a 16-year-old with dual Israeli-Amer- ican citizenship, disap- peared while hitchhiking home near the West Bank city of Hebron late at night on June 12 and were never heard from again. Despite the dangers, hitchhiking is common among Israe- lis traveling in and out of Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The teens had been studying at Jew- ish seminaries in the West Bank. The military and the Shin Bet security agency announced late Monday that the bodies had been found. "The bodies are cur- rently going through fo- rensic identification. The families of the abducted teens have been notified," the army said. Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman, said the bod- ies were found "under a pile of rocks" near the vil- lage of Halhul, just north of Hebron. Such ocean pollution has drawn attention in recent years because of its poten- tial harm to fish and other wildlife. The new work drew on results from an around-the- world cruise by a research ship that towed a mesh net at 141 sites, as well as other studies. Researchers esti- mated the total amount of floating plastic debris in open ocean at 7,000 to 35,000 tons. Andres Cozar of the Uni- versity of Cadiz in Spain, an author of the study, said that's a lot less than the 1 million tons he had extrap- olated from data reaching back to the 1970s. The new estimate in- cludes only floating debris, not plastic that may reside beneath the surface or on the ocean floor. Of the plastic pieces caught by the ship's net, most were less than about a fifth of an inch long. Some floating pieces start out small, like the microbeads found in some toothpastes and cosmetics or industrial pellets used to make plas- tic products. Other small pieces can result when wave action breaks up larger ob- jects, like bottle caps, de- tergent bottles and shop- ping bags. The net turned up fewer small pieces than expected, and it will be important to figure out why, research- ers said. Perhaps the tini- est pieces are being eaten by small fish, with uncer- tain effects on their health, Cozar said in an email. While the research showed plastic to be dis- tributed widely, concentra- tions were highest in five areas that were predicted by ocean current patterns. They are west of the U.S., between the U.S. and Af- rica, west of southern South America and east and west of the southern tip of Af- rica. Plastic debris from land reaches the ocean mostly through storm water run- off, the researchers said in their report, released Mon- day by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Kara Lavender Law, who studies plastic pollution at the Sea Education Associ- ation in Woods Hole, Mas- sachusetts, said the study provides the first global estimate she knows of for floating plastic debris. The estimate appears to be in the ballpark, given the re- sults of prior regional stud- ies, said Law, who didn't participate in the new work.
