Iwroteinmylastpost- ing that the high pres- sure ridge keeping pre- cipitation from the state hovered over us sixteen months and counting. As the good rains of March and April came about that ridge began to dis- perse; it reappears, but for more natural spans, since a large cross-section of the Body of Christ has begun a particular process of sus- tained prayer and repen- tance over the state. The Rain and Reign Co- alition is a gathering of some thirty-five California ministries agreeing with each other to pray repen- tance — understood as re- focus of attention on God and His Kingdom — on be- half of ourselves and the state we love. That re-fo- cus includes renuncia- tion of California's historic sins. We renounce shedding of innocent blood — from the unborn to Native peo- ples to victims of gang vio- lence — and the idolatry of human ingenuity without reference to God's vision and provision, the sexual sin of a state hosting the pornography industry and closing its eyes to human trafficking, and the many broken covenants past and present — from treaties with tribes to abandon- ment of families by their heads. We do not dwell on sin, but we do commit our- selves to seeking opportu- nities to eliminate its pres- ence and legacy. The coalition is commit- ted to daily prayer asking God to break the drought cycle, thanking and prais- ing Him for the rain He has sent. Some reservoirs are full and the hillsides are green already. But we recognize that rainfall is hovering around half normal levels for this time of year even as the natural rainy sea- son draws to a close. The snowpack on which we de- pend for sustained water is less than a third normal depth. We serve a God Who an- swers prayer quickly, and this is a de- posit on His prom- ise to bless the state. Our resistance to ac- countability for past and present behavior is still in His Face, effec- tively blocking the fullness of His blessing. Ongoing drought — and make no mistake the drought is in- deed ongoing — comes not from divine rage but from God's love which says He is absolutely determined to see us become all that we can be. And so the co- alition continues to pray and to call for prayer. Why do the heathen rage? That is the ques- tion in Psalms 2. The hea- then are those who do not accept God as authorita- tive; it is an archaic term with no judgment in it. But those who reject the notion that God's Son died for them and so bought their abundant life of- ten rage at any hint of ac- countability to a higher power. Throw in the notion of responsibility for their ancestors' acts and the rage becomes monumen- tal. (Never mind that we cheerfully accept the passed-down benefits of ancestral achievement.) Frankly, I am not writing to or about these heathen. It is the Body of Christ God calls to repentance. When the fruit of our re- pentance comes into the bin is time enough to look to a clueless world and ask if they want to share the bounty through joining us in repentance. National Day of Re- pentance is calling on churches across the na- tion to name May 4 Re- pentance Sunday. The Rain and Reign Coalition is partnering with NDR in California to echo that call. Those who agree will engage some form of cor- porate repen- tance or re-focus on God and His Kingdom — as depicted in the Scriptures and not as we imag- ine it to be. The willing are ex- horted to re- nounce participation in the categories of sin cited above. This is no call for sackcloth and ashes, much less self-flagellation, but for a humble acknowledge- ment that we have messed up and it is time to fess up. Then and only then can we credibly ask God to lead us in the transfor- mation of our communi- ties and states into prov- inces of His Kingdom in the power of His Holy Spirit. Then and only then can we say we are prepar- ing for the Fourth Great Awakening in our land that He promises. In the meantime, many claim there is nothing you can do about death, taxes, and weather. They are wrong; we can pray and then walk through the doors we see opened only after concerted prayer. Others travel the state claiming the drought is over. They are wrong; we pray they — and we — be- come filled with God's hu- mility. (Coalition mem- bers have committed to repenting until even secu- lar authorities affirm the drought's end.) What is right on is the certainty God loves His people more than life itself. There ac- tually is a pony under all this…drought. The next four postings deal with each pattern of historical sin in California. GODTALK Rain and reign Don St. John, pastor of The First Southern Bap- tist Church at 585 Kimball Road in Red Bluff, would like to invite everyone to a 5th Sunday Sing scheduled for Sunday. The event will feature lots of music, fellow- ship and finger food. Everyone is invited, starting at 6 p.m. and open to all ages. TO DO Fi hSundaySingsetforSundayinRedBluff SACRAMENTO Beginning Friday morning, Jehovah's Witnesses highlighted a connection between family values and the teachings of Jesus Christ during a three- day convention titled "Keep Seeking First God's King- dom!" at the sleep train arena. The Witnesses are ex- tending an open invitation to all to attend lively discus- sions of Jesus' words: "Keep on, then, seeking first the Kingdom." The program will also ex- amine how those words of Jesus can be of special in- terest to families. Jehovah's Witnesses in- vite people of all ages to attend. The program ses- sions begin at 9:20 a.m. on all three days of the conven- tion. Admission is free. Conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary dona- tions. JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES Convention to highlight family values The most Reverend Jaime Soto, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, will preside in a bilingual mass on Sunday, June 29 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 2355 Monroe Ave. in Red Bluff. The day's events will start with a procession at 10 a.m. from the school front lawn to the Parish Hall then followed by a bilingual mass at 10:30 a.m. It will be culminated with a potluck and cultural entertainment at noon. This is to honor the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus whose feast is set two days earlier. The event is hosted by Sacred Heart's Bilingual Bridge Ministry in collab- oration with the church's councils, ministries and committees. "We are very honored that Bishop Soto has ac- cepted our invitation to participate in this impor- tant parish event," said Miguel Espinoza, chairman of the Bilingual Bridge Min- istry. The event also serves as a farewell to Rev. Joyle Marti- nez, the parochial adminis- trator for five years. He has been assigned to St. Paul's Church in Sacramento, ef- fective July 1. Bishop Soto shepherds the Catholic community of 20 counties in northern Cal- ifornia which make up the Catholic Diocese of Sacra- mento. Sacred Heart Church, the majestic brick building that sits at the corner of Main and Elm streets, is a recog- nized landmark in the city of Red Bluff. It was com- pleted in 1906 and is a tes- timony to the long history of Catholicism in Tehama County. It was added to the National Register of His- toric Places on Feb. 4, 1982, which recognizes buildings that are of significance to the history of a community, a state, or the nation. The Archdiocese of Santa Fe announced it is exploring sainthood for an Italian- born nun who challenged Billy the Kid, calmed an- gry mobs and helped open New Mexico territory hos- pitals and schools. Archbishop Michael Sheehan said he has re- ceived permission from the Vatican to open the "Saint- hood Cause" for Sister Blandina Segale, an educa- tor and social worker who worked in Ohio, Colorado and New Mexico. It's the first time in New Mexico's 400-year history with the Roman Catholic Church that a decree open- ing the cause of beatifica- tion and canonization has been declared.
