Historic Hauntings Returns to Downtown Fayetteville by ERINN CRIDER Hey, did you know…Fayetteville is haunted? And on Oct. 15-17 and 22-24 it can all happen right before your eyes on the Historic Hauntings Hay Ride. You can see for yourself the spooky history our city is steeped in. The hour-long tour will include re- enactors and story tellers recreating scenes from our city's haunted past. "This ride is not your typical Halloween thing where people are dressed up in scary costumes and jump out at you, it is not that kind of event, it is true ghost stories and legends of our community," said Carrie King, the executive director of the Dogwood Festival. New this year to the Historic Hauntings Hay Ride is a Boo and Brew party, a patio party complete with food, drinks and live entertainment. The party is adult- oriented, and is held in conjunction with the hay ride. Part of the party includes a costume contest for any and all who want to participate. Costumes will be judged nightly. Passengers are encouraged to wear their most intriguing costumes and participate. Also new this year is a stop at the Transportation Museum. Other stops will include the Kyle House and Cross Creek Cemetery. The proceeds of this event are split between the Dogwood Festival and Gilbert Theater, which provides the actors for the scenes reenacted along the route. The past four years the Dogwood Festival has donated money to Friends of Cross Creek Cemetery Fund. The organization has been working to restore the damage done by vandals, which is estimated to be around $75,000. Last year the festival donated enough to restore the Ellen Smith monument in Cross Creek Cemetery. "It is a rain or shine event, full moon that is and we do tell passengers to dress appropriately for weather. You are on a hay ride, and you will be exposed to the elements, so we do encourage passengers to dress appropriately. It is child friendly, but we do tell parents we leave it to their discretion," King said. So get ready for something that is not traditionally thought of as a thrilling educational experience, a haunted hay ride through downtown Fayetteville, and some of its darker moments. Then you will be able to tell some ghost stories that you haven't just heard through the grapevine. The hay rides are scheduled for 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30, 9 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased prior to the dates. Tickets are $15, and are available at the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival offi ce in the Liberty Point Building at 145 Person St. Call 323-1934 or visit www.
