Saturday, June 4, 2011 – Daily News 5A Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith How important is meditation as a spiritual path in your faith? PROPHET'S EXAMPLE Syed E. Hasan, Midland Islamic Council, Kansas City: In Islam there is no better example of meditation and spiri- tuality than the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him). It was a series of deep meditation that climaxed in his prophethood and revelation of divine messages that were recorded during his lifetime and preserved in its original, unaltered form in the Quran. Long before he received the first divine revelation in A.D. 610, he used to isolate himself from his people in Mecca to meditate in a cave, reflecting upon the plight of his people and the evil way of life that was an accepted norm in society. He would meditate deeply, trying to find a solution for the pathetic conditions prevailing among his people. It was during one of these periods of meditation that the Archangel Gabriel appeared and asked him to recite these divine words: "Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created; Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood; Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful; He Who taught (the use of) the pen; Taught man that which he knew not." (The Quran, 96:1-5). Introspection, reflection, thinking and reasoning are emphasized throughout the Quran, but verses 10-16 of chapter 16 are particularly profound, as they challenge us to use reason and logic to understand natural laws and accept the sovereignty of one God. Bhattacharyya, an active member of Hindu com- munity: Meditation is the continuous application of the mind to the contemplation of a religious object of reverence as a spiritual exercise. Since the earliest period of Hinduism, seers and saints of all ages practiced and perfected the med- itation technique, which helped them attain a very high spir- itual level. Ancient Vedic seers could communicate with God in a deep meditative state, and used to receive God's words of wisdom, which were eventually recorded in the Scriptures of Vedas and Upanishads. Bhagavad Gita, regarded as "practical Upanishad," teaches that the path of meditation is one of the four spiritu- al disciplines (yogas) that ultimately lead to salvation. The other three paths are unselfish work, philosophical inquiry and devotion to God. Over two thousand years ago, Sage Patanjali formulated the eight-limbed yoga system. The sys- tem is a step-by-step guide to a spiritual journey culminat- ing in the highest level of spiritual attainment. The initial five steps are required for purification of body and mind. The next steps are concentration, meditation and finally Samadhi. In the final stage the person becomes completely oblivious of the physical world around, as the person's mind and the object of meditation are fused together as one. In modern days many spiritual seekers practice medita- tion under the able guidance of spiritual masters. These practitioners of meditation find many benefits, such as power of concentration, alertness, self-discipline and mental peace. Life trumps Planned Parenthood I was astonished reading the Op-Ed page of the New York Times. The columnist – a Ms. Cain – was bemoaning the fact that Rep. Mike Pence and the Republican dominated House voted to eliminate the taxpayer funded subsidy to Planned Par- enthood. The giant abortion provider receives three hundred sixty million dollars each year from taxpayers – to fund their clinics’ infrastructure and so keep them open while they rake in more than two hundred mil- lion dollars more from the abor- tions they perform. This move comes in the wake of a sting operation that once again – this time including twelve clinics in six states from New York to Ari- zona – unmasks the routine prac- tice in Planned Parenthood clin- ics of advising pimps on getting birth control, and illegal abor- tions for girls as young as twelve. These girls are sex slaves to the pimps inasmuch as many are in the country illegally and have nowhere to go even if they could escape their masters. Pence and his colleagues had already introduced legislation in the House to deny all federal funding for abortion services – something Obamacare promised to avoid but slipped in anyway. Polls show that up to 80% of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for abortion, and the administration is well aware of this. Yet Planned Parenthood has been caught on camera descend- ing lower than low in counseling these human vultures about maintaining their income stream from young girls. Planned Par- enthood’s position is that clinic managers reported their conver- sations to the authorities, as though that excuses the collusion of workers with sex traffickers and the children they exploit – and as though that does these girls any good once the pimps have taken them back to the anonymity of the streets. And yes – it is true – the clinics are forbidden to use their federal subsidies to pay for abortions, but they use them to pay the workers who are colluding in the felony of trafficking these girls! There is no excuse for continuing this funding. The columnist opines that without the subsidies nearly two million poor women will have no place to go to be tested and treated for sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and other (non-abortive) family planning services. This is anything but true. The state of Texas has divert- ed state funding from Planned Parenthood to the many clinics operated by (admittedly) pro-life crisis pregnancy centers. The Times thinks this a tragedy because it claims these clinics dispense bogus medical care while pushing the pro life agen- da. Reality is that these clinics must be licensed before they can offer medical care and they must pass medical muster to be licensed. They charge their clients nothing for their services and Texas is an exception in sup- porting them with public money. They are avowedly pro-life, but their services are available with- out judgment and regardless of decisions made by clientele. I know personally some of the dedicated doctors and nurses who volunteer their time at Red- ding’s own Carenet Pregnancy Center and I would be honored to receive their services for my own daughter. Reality is that Planned Parent- hood founder Margaret Sanger was well known for her racist views and her commitment to reducing population in any way she could. Her agenda was to eliminate people she saw as defective, and it is no accident that more than two thirds of Planned Parenthood facilities are located in black neighborhoods. (Blacks account for twelve per cent of the national population. Jim Wilson GodTalk Claims of clinic prevalence in black neighborhoods vary from 70% to as high as 80%.) This is an organization that is as dedi- cated to death as any I have ever encountered, and if there is no legal way (at this time) to outlaw the organization there is at least no time like the present to cut them off from public funding. Don’t get me wrong. There are countless dedicated men and women who support Planned Parenthood and even work for them. These people sincerely believe they are helping and lifting up women who cannot help and lift themselves. They are not evil, but they are misled by half a century of Planned Par- enthood propaganda. When they discover the truth – as Houston, Texas, clinic manager Abbey Johnson did – they often become articulate and courageous spokespersons for life. Jesus said, "I came that they might have life, and that abundantly," in John 10:10. Life trumps death, and the tide of public opinion has turned on outfits like Planned Parenthood. It is time to shut down the public money spigot and let this organization collapse of its own bloated weight. It is time for life to trump Planned Parenthood. The Rev.
