Thursday, June 2, 2011 – Daily News 3B Native plant group plans summer trips The following are the summer field trips scheduled for the Mt. Lassen Chap- ter, California Native Plant Society. All trips are open to the public. Feather Falls, Plumas National Forest, Sunday, June 19 We expect to see many early summer flowers along this shaded, well-main- tained path, including campion, Clarkia, wild ginger and many others. We will drop about 700 feet in 3.5 miles down to the viewpoint opposite the falls; at 640 feet it rivals Yosemite. From here you can circle around to the head of the falls and continue upstream to an old homestead. Meet at the west lot of Chico Park and Ride at 8:30 am with lunch, water, hiking gear, sun/insect protection and money for ride-sharing. Leaders: Woody (530-342- 6053) and Wes (530-342-2293). Fens at Hellgrammite Lakes, Lakes Basin, Plumas National Forest, Saturday, July 16 We will drive from Chico on the Feath- er River Scenic Byway 105 miles to the Mohawk Ranger Station, where we will meet our Forest Service guide. Lakes Basin is the gem of Plumas National For- est with 50 or more crystal alpine lakes confined within five small glacial basins. We will visit one of the larger glaciated lake basins, hiking a gradual two miles to Hellgrammite Lake, elevation 6900 feet, where we will visit nearby fens. A fen is like a bog, but it supports more diverse plant life. Fens often feature floating edges or islands of matted vegetation. Expect to see a variety of coloring flower- ing plants and shrubs in a forest setting. Meet at the west lot of Chico Park and Ride in time to leave by 8 am with lunch, water, sturdy shoes, sun/insect protection and money for ride-sharing. Call leaders for alternate meeting site. Leaders: Gerry (530-893-5123) and Wes (530-342-2293). Wilson Lake, Lassen National Forest, Sunday, July 24 We will drive 65 miles via highway 32 and 36 to the southern slopes of Mt. Lassen in Plumas County, and then take gravel county roads, enjoying short easy walks as we see lovely floral displays and interesting areas in and around Wilson Lake. Shasta exit and then southwest on paved roads to the Castle Lake trail head. The moderate 2 mile (round tri) trail skirts the eastern shore of Castle Lake, at 5346 feet elevation and then climbs 600 feet through several wildflower habitats and subalpine hanging meadows to Heart Lake, perched in granite cliffs. The 4.2 mile round trip trail to Devil's Kitchen is gentle and the trail is wide and has a smooth surface. The trail begins near the Drakesbad Guest Ranch at 5680 feet and passes through an area of small warm springs. The first half is across flowered meadows, before entering a forested set- ting. Devil's Kitchen is a thermal area of belching fumaroles, boiling mud pots, steaming rock outcrops in a dazzling array of fiery colors, the whole area tran- sected by a fast flowing snow melt stream. The trail is clean and easy to follow, and we will make many stops to view flowers and spectacu- lar vistas.
