TheGene- sis Generation — born after 1983 — have been called a fatherless gen- eration, as has my own Boomer Gen- eration. In 2008 God called out a new season based on Luke 1:17. The verse — in its prophetic context — proclaims a John the Baptist generation of fa- thers (and mothers) turn- ing their hearts to the chil- dren…all children. Fast forward to 2014 and I hap- pened to watch two mov- ies about fathering on a flight from Malaysia home to the States. The first was the criti- cally acclaimed Nebraska, a film I cannot acclaimed. It depicts an alcoholic, thor- oughly self-absorbed, and utterly disengaged father played — superbly — by Bruce Dern. He imagines he has won a million dollar prize and is obsessed with traveling from Billings, Montana, to Lincoln, Ne- braska, to claim it. His sons and his wife move heaven and earth to get him there, in the vain hope he might actually notice the sacri- fices they make for him. He stops in his home town — in Nebraska — and inter- acts with old friends and relatives just as useless as he is; their reason for living is to con or coerce him out of money he has not won. The few people he knows who have lived decent lives and want nothing from him are given a few meaningless moments of screen time. It is all about this loser who never gets it and does noth- ing to justify his existence, relieve the suffering he has caused, or bless his chil- dren. The second was the un- acclaimed Delivery Man. Vince Vaughn plays David Wozniak, another loser, but with the difference that he wants to be differ- ent. David donates sperm twenty years back and takes his whole family to Eu- rope on the pro- ceeds from his do- nation. He discov- ers the clinic used his sperm to sire more than five hundred children with nearly one hundred fifty demanding to know him despite the confidentiality agreement he signed. Although his lawyer assures him he can win a lawsuit against the clinic if his name is leaked — he does win the suit — he comes gradually and freely to accept responsibility for fathering these kids. Begin- ning with reluctance, and without revealing his iden- tity, he helps one secure a job, another kick a heroin addiction, and gifts his time to still another. Turning his heart to his children moves him to get rid of the mar- ijuana grow in his apart- ment and, ultimately, to reveal himself. In other words, turning his heart to his children changes him and creates authentic adult humanity in him. David freezes when he meets his son with cere- bral palsy, but — haltingly — steps up to the plate for this challenge as well. He makes the necessary com- mitment to really father his newborn son with his girlfriend, and commits to marry her. This is a film I do acclaim for presenting a man donning authentic humanity by taking up the challenge to turn his heart to the children — any chil- dren — because that is God- in-Christ's heart in this sea- son. There is plenty of good teaching about the Father Heart of God. There are plenty of opportunities for fatherless ones to experi- ence that love from Him, mediated through men and women willing to par- ent in His image. But there is precious little on the re- ality that the act of father- ing is what makes us good sons and daughters as well as good fathers and moth- ers. It works a lot like the centurion's faith in Mat- thew 8:5-13. The centurion understands that Jesus need only order it and his paralyzed servant is healed. He understands Jesus' au- thority because he operates both in and under author- ity as a Roman officer. Je- sus applauds his faith as un- paralleled in Israel. And the best news is that we need not know how to parent to begin. It is on-the-job train- ing, just as it was for David Wozniak. My own father had no pa- triarchal role model grow- ing up. He made plenty of mistakes raising me — hurt- ful mistakes. But when the chips were down he stepped up to the plate. He pushed when I needed pushing and had my back when I needed him behind me. He blessed me on my wedding day like one of the biblical patri- archs although he could not have understood — in bib- lical terms — what he did. I hope my children — those I raised and those I spiritu- ally father — see my father and my God in me. Our alternatives are sim- ple. We can be as self-cen- tered as the Bruce Dern character and kid ourselves that he is interesting, or we can be as Christ-centered as David Wozniak turns out to be — whether or not he knows it. The choice is very simple. GODTALK Turning the Fathers' hearts Jim Wilson The Right Rever- end Barry Beisner, bishop of the Epis- copal Diocese of Northern Califor- nia, will be ordain- ing deacon intern Kathryn Wallace to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Satur- day, June 14 at Trinity Ca- thedral in Sacramento. Wallace has served the congregation of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Red Bluff since August 2013 as deacon intern, focusing her energies on facilitating ser- vice and care in the com- munity beyond the doors of the church. Her work within the St. Peter's con- gregation has in- cluded leadership in Morning Prayer, preaching and di- aconal responsibil- ities. Along with priests and bishops, the role of deacon is one of the three offices to which people can be ordained in the Episco- pal Church. In 2011, Wallace enrolled in the School of Deacons, located at the Church Di- vinity School of the Pacific campus in Berkeley. This custom tailored program meets the needs of work- ing adults preparing for service in several Episco- pal dioceses. The Church Divinity School of the Pa- cific is the only Episco- pal seminary on the West Coast. St. Peter's Episcopal Church is at 510 Jefferson St., on the corner of Jeffer- son and Elm streets. PETER'S BishoptoordainEpiscopaldeacon Wallace By Nicole Winfield The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Almost all Vatican officials initially opposed Pope Francis' idea of bringing the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to- gether for a prayer sum- mit, he said in an interview published Friday. However, they eventually warmed up to the idea. Francis hosted Shimon Peres and Mahmoud Ab- bas on the lawn of the Vatican gardens on June 8 for an evening of Jew- ish, Christian and Muslim prayers, weeks after the lat- est round of U.S.-sponsored peace talks collapsed. The meeting wasn't aimed at restarting talks, but merely to serve as a symbol of mu- tual coexistence and re- spect. In an interview with the Barcelona newspaper "La Vanguardia," Fran- cis acknowledged the idea was completely novel and wasn't easy to pull off. But he said he had one aim: "to open a window to the world." "Here in the Vatican, 99 percent said we shouldn't do it, and then later the 1 percent started growing," he said. Francis, whose friend- ship with Jews is well- known, appeared to defend World War II-era Pope Pius XII, accused by some Jews of not speaking out enough against the Holocaust. He noted that Pius sheltered Jews and said even the Al- lied powers had some ex- plaining to do. "They knew perfectly well the Nazis' rail net- work used to bring Jews to concentration camps. They had the photos. Why didn't they bomb the tracks?" he asked. "It'd be good that we discuss ev- erything" and not just Pius' actions. On current events, Fran- cis said he was concerned about recent secessionist movements in Scotland, Barcelona and Italy's Pada- nia region. He suggested that the secession that oc- curred in the former Yugo- slavia was understandable since "there are places with cultures that are so differ- ent that you can't keep them together even with glue." "The Yugoslav case was very clear, but I ask my- self if it's so clear in other cases," he said. "You have to study it case by case." Asked why he even dared to enter into the Mid- east "hurricane," Francis quipped that the true hur- ricane came when he vis- ited Brazil last year and was mobbed by millions of well-wishers because he refused the bullet-proof popemobile. "I couldn't greet people and tell them I love them from inside a sardine can, even if it was crystal!" he said.
