ByNoahTrister TheAssociatedPress BROOKLYN, MICH. Kevin Har- vick made Michigan Interna- tional Speedway's latest track record look routine. In what is becoming an an- nual occurrence at MIS, Har- vick pushed the track's qualify- ing mark a little bit higher Fri- day, winning the pole for this weekend's Sprint Cup race at 204.557 mph. Harvick's pole- winning speed was the fastest since Bill Elliott set the record of 212.809 mph at Talladega Su- perspeedway in April 1987. "This is one of those race- tracks where you're running fast, but you really can't put it all in perspective, I guess, un- til you hit something," Harvick said. "It's so wide, it's so fast and so smooth, but you don't re- ally get that huge sensation of speed." Drivers have broken 200 mph with regularity at Michi- gan since the track was repaved before the 2012 season. Marcos Ambrose had a speed of 203.241 in 2012, the first time anyone won a pole at over 200 mph since Elliott did it before horsepower- sapping restrictor plates were in- troduced at Talladega and Day- tona. Last August, Joey Logano increased the track record to 203.949. Harvick was even faster in winning his third pole of the year and ninth of his career. By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press PINEHURST, N.C. Martin Kaymer set a U.S. Open record Friday with a game so dominant that he did more than just build a six-shot lead. He managed to bring Tiger Woods into the conversation at a major he's not even playing. Kaymer opened with a short birdie and rolled his way to a second straight round of 5-un- der 65 — this one without a bo- gey. He set the 36-hole scoring record at 10-under 130 and left the rest of the field wondering if the 29-year-old German was playing a different course, or even a different tournament. "If he does it for two more days, then we're all playing for second spot," said Adam Scott, the world's No. 1 player. Such talk once was reserved for Woods, still home recovering from back surgery. Kaymer played early on a Pinehurst No. 2 course that re- ceived a burst of showers over- night. That red 10 on the lead- erboard next to his name was a daunting sight the rest of the day. He led by eight shots when he finished, and only three players in the afternoon cut into that deficit. Although Spain could still ad- vance out of the group stage, the game may have signaled the end of the run by a generation of Spanish stars whose quick pass- ing, "tiki-taka" style delighted the world and helped them win the last three major tournaments. Dutch strikers Robert Van Persie and Arjen Robben both scored twice, including Van Persie's diving header off of an audacious 40-yard pass. The ball looped over hapless Spanish goal- keeper Iker Casillas as Van Persie slid on his stomach on the wet grass before running to the side- lines with his fists clenched to cel- ebrate what is sure to be one of the goals of the tournament. Defender Stefan de Vrij also scored — his first international goal — in a dominating second half that had the orange-clad Dutch fans in Arena Fonte Nova on their feet the whole time.
