The lion's lore page 2 D uring the recruitment process it became apparent to Jim Johnson '84 that SAE offered approachable members and a friendly environment. As a Kansas Beta, Jim learned how to balance college life with the appropriate amount of structure provided by the fraternity. Jim advanced in academics and enjoyed the leadership opportunities he gained through the chapter offices he held throughout college. Jim graduated with a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering and construction science in 1984. He'll always remember the late night discussions of exploring possibilities, humor, and the camaraderie he gained from his brothers. "The friendships are absolutely memorable," he said. While he may not have been aware during his college days, SAE helped prepare him for the professional world and taught him how to act in a business environment, personal responsibility, and overall life balance. "The tools that you learn in your undergraduate years—whether it is the balance between education, personal responsibility, being a member of a team, or how to get along with others—will guide you and serve you well throughout your life. The order and priority of your values may vary through life, but make sure you establish them early and live guided by them. Honesty and integrity should not be for sale and are two of the values that you will cherish throughout the rest of your life." As the years have passed since graduation, Jim has been amazed at what everyone has accomplished. He is grateful that at any given time in his life he could pick up the phone and call a fraternity brother who would drop whatever they were doing in order to help him. The experiences shared and learned from SAE will continue to be memories that he will cherish for a lifetime. Jim is the president and CEO of GE Johnson Construction Company, a $400 million (+/-) commercial building construction company headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In his free time, he enjoys doing anything outdoors and spending time with his wife, Laura, and four children: Jared, Joey, Nicole, and Tyler. He can be contacted at johnsonj@gejohnson.com.
