The Associated Press LOS ANGELES ESPN has hired Landon Donovan to offer commentary on the U.S. soccer team he was cut from just before the World Cup. The all-time American leader in goals and assists, the 32-year-old Donovan was dropped last month in a highly debated move by coach Jurgen Klinsmann. He made his debut during ESPN's two-hour World Cup preview show Wednesday. On Klinsmann's com- ments that the U.S. isn't ready to win a World Cup, Donovan said on air: "This will come as a surprise to nobody, but I disagree with Jurgen." Donovan will work out of the company's Los An- geles studios, with a par- ticular focus on his former team. He will provide anal- ysis before and after the Americans' group-stage matches and during half- time. Donovan will also appear on shows such as "SportsCenter." "Adding Landon to our ESPN roster just before the World Cup is a coup be- cause he knows the United States team better than anyone having played such a huge role in its success, especially at this event," said Jed Drake, ESPN's ex- ecutive producer for World Cup coverage. "Landon is also one of this country's biggest sports stars and we believe that he will help at- tract even more fans to our monthlong coverage." Donovan played in the last three World Cups, scor- ing a U.S.-record five goals. His thrilling stoppage-time goal against Algeria sent the Americans to the sec- ond round four years ago. Former teammate Jozy Altidore said in Sao Paulo he wasn't too surprised by the move. "He's a smart guy. He knows the game very well," Altidore said. "It was al- ways going to happen — right? — him to be a com- mentator." Midfielder Alejandro Bedoya agreed that "I don't see any problem with it." "I feel like people are probably going to want to tune in on that, yeah," he added. WORLD CUP SOCCER ESPN hires Donovan as analyst By Linda Deutsch The Associated Press LOS ANGELES A trial will be held next month to de- termine whether Donald Sterling, who opposes his estranged wife's planned sale of the Los Angeles Clippers, was properly re- moved as an administra- tor for the family trust that owns the team. An attorney for Shelly Sterling went to probate court Wednesday to re- quest a trial to confirm that as sole trustee she can proceed with the $2 billion sale to former Mi- crosoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The development is the latest in a legal tug-of-war that has ensued following the NBA's decision to ban Sterling for life after racist remarks he made emerged in a recording in April. Sterling is fighting the de- cision and suing the league for $1 billion. The league has con- tended that Sterling's com- ments were bad for busi- ness and damaged both the Clippers and the larger NBA. The trial, which was granted exceptionally quickly, will begin July 7 and last four days. The deadline for the sale is July 15, which is also the date the NBA Board of Gover- nors is scheduled to vote on whether it will approve the sale. Donald Sterling's law- yer, Bobby Samini, left the courthouse without comment after a clerk an- nounced the trial schedule. Neither Sterling was pres- ent. "I just want to resolve this as quickly as possible," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told The Associated Press in Miami on Wednes- day, when he appeared at an NBA Cares event. The crux of the case will center on the question of whether Donald Sterling, 80, is mentally compe- tent to be a co-trustee of The Sterling Family Trust, which gives him the au- thority to determine the team's future. According to the trust's terms, he can be ruled "mentally in- capacitated" after being evaluated by two doctors, Shelly Sterling's lawyer Pierce O'Donnell said. CLIPPERS Trial to settle Sterling issue He opposes his estranged wife's planned sale of team DAVIDKOHL—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS The Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto hits a two-run double off Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu during the third inning Wednesday in Cincinnati. The Associated Press CINCINNATI Johnny Cueto matched his career high with 12 strikeouts in six in- nings, and Joey Votto and Jay Bruce — the missing core of Cincinnati's bat- ting order much of the sea- son — each drove in runs, leading the Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Los Ange- les Dodgers on Wednesday night. Cueto (6-5) followed his shortest start of the season with one of his most dom- inating. He gave up three singles and didn't walk a batter, leaving after his 112th pitch. Cueto lasted only five innings during an 8-0 loss to Philadelphia on Friday night. Jonathan Broxton es- caped a bases-loaded, one- out threat in the seventh by getting Hanley Ramirez to ground into a double play. Votto doubled home a pair of runs off Hyun-Jin Ryu (7-3), who had won his last four starts.
