ONTHEAIR By Josh Dubow TheAssociatedPress SANTA CLARA Jonathan Martin returned to prac- tice this week for the San Francisco 49ers after miss- ing more than three weeks recovering from a bout of mononucleosis. Martin returned to the practice field Monday and has been taking part in or- ganized team activities on the field for the first time with his new team. "It felt good out there," Martin said Tuesday. "Just trying to get my timing back. It felt good to be back out there with my team- mates and get this offense down." Martin took part in the early portion of the off- season program before coming down with the vi- ral infection just before the start of OTAs. He lost about 12 pounds because of the illness and spent last week trying to regain his strength. "I just have to get back in shape," he said. "The big- gest thing is timing, get- ting your hands down and footwork back. I lost a little bit of weight. That's what I worked on last week." Martin spent most of his time Tuesday working as a backup right tackle. He is also seeing time at left tackle and could get a look at guard as he tries to earn a spot as a reserve offensive lineman in San Francisco. The transition to a new team has been helped by Martin's familiarity with coach Jim Harbaugh's of- fense, having played for him in college. Martin also played on a West Coast- based offense with Miami "We have a lot of plays," he said. "It's been good. There are only so many plays in football. It's just getting the language down, the calls, the adjustments and different looks." Martin was traded from the Dolphins to the Niners in mid-March, providing him with a new start after his departure from Miami last October. He accused teammate Richie Incog- nito of bullying in a scan- dal that overshadowed the franchise's 8-8 season. An NFL investigation determined Incognito and two other Dolphins offen- sive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of Martin. Incognito was then suspended and missed the final eight games. Martin praised the locker room culture in San Francisco, calling it a "great environment" where players take care of each other. The NFL is traveling around the league to meet with all 32 teams this off- season to stress anti-bully- ing. The Niners will have their presentation next week. "I think it will be a good discussion," Harbaugh said. "I look forward to it. I don't think it will hurt and I'm sure it will help." NFL Martinbackatpractice with 49ers for first time Missed several weeks with bout of mononucleosis Machado let his bat fly toward third base after swinging at a pitch from Fernando Abad in the eighth inning. The bat- toss came during a plate appearance in which Abad threw successive high-and- tight pitches. After the bat went soar- ing, both benches emptied. Machado and Abad were ejected. Abad was fined but not suspended Tuesday. "I don't really care," Machado said. "He's part of the Oakland A's organi- zation and I'm a Baltimore Oriole. I know what I did and he knows what he did. We both got to pay the con- sequences." Machado, however, isn't prepared to sit out five games — yet. His hearing could take place next week in New York, or he could drop the appeal as soon as Wednesday. "We'll see what tomor- row brings," Orioles man- ager Buck Showalter said Tuesday. "I think right now he's going to appeal and take 24 hours to think about the next step. "Plus, probably the most important thing for him right now is make sure he puts the club in a position in case we make an adjust- ment in our roster. It's a lit- tle short notice to get some- body here if he started (the suspension) tonight." Machado apologized to his teammates Monday for twice losing his temper during the three-game se- ries against Oakland. On Friday night, he yelled in the face of Oak- land's Josh Donaldson af- ter the third baseman tagged him on the chest, knocking Machado off his feet. The dugouts also emp- tied after that confronta- tion. "It's been a frustrating last couple days," Machado said. "We're just going to try to put this behind us." Showalter agreed. "He's a 21-year-old young man that made a mistake, and he's done the right thing since then to move forward with it the way it's supposed to be done," the manager said. "Now there are some more steps involved before we can put it behind us." Orioles first baseman Chris Davis thought it might be prudent for Mach- ado to accept the sentence and turn the page. "Personally, I would kind of let it go away. I'm not in his shoes. It's easy to say that on the outside looking in," Davis said. "You screw up, you have to deal with the conse- quences. He'll deal with it and move on. We've al- ready moved on." Machado FROM PAGE 1 knew Bob as a teammate and a friend will miss him greatly." Welch was drafted in the first round by the Dodg- ers in 1977 out of Eastern Michigan. His most mem- orable moment for Los An- geles was in the 1978 World Series, when the 21-year- old rookie struck out A's slugger Reggie Jackson with two runners on base to end Game 2. "I was stone sober, too," Welch said in the book. "I hadn't gotten around to drinking before a game, particularly a World Series game — although, given time, I would have." Welch won the AL Cy Young Award after going 27-6 with a 2.95 ERA in 1990. His 27 wins tied him with Steve Carlton in 1972 for the most in a single sea- son since Denny McClain's 31 victories in 1968. "He was one of the great- est competitors to wear the Dodger uniform," Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten said. Several current A's play- ers also offered condo- lences on Twitter. "Devastated to learn of Bob Welch's passing," A's left-hander Sean Doolittle wrote. "The A's organiza- tion lost not only one of its best pitchers, but one of its best people." No one answered the door at Welch's home Tues- day, which had been sealed with a sticker from the Or- ange County coroner. Neighbor Alma Purcha said she woke up to find po- lice cars outside the home several blocks from the Pa- cific Ocean. She said Welch divided his time between Arizona and Seal Beach. She last saw him with his son and daughter Fri- day, when they exchanged pleasantries. The A's said Welch is sur- vived by his sons Dylan, 25, and Riley, 23, daughter Kelly, 18, and former wife Mary Ellen. The last three NBA seasons ended in this building, the last two fol- lowed by championship pa- rades. But the Spurs nearly canceled the last one, building a five-point lead in the final half-minute of regulation of Game 6, a ti- tle seeming so certain that workers were already mak- ing preparations around the court. But the Heat rallied to win in overtime and took Game 7, leaving the Spurs with a summer to think about the one that got away. They're in good shape to get another chance. With the NBA Finals scrapping the 2-3-2 format — with the lower seed play- ing three consecutive home games — the Spurs would have a chance to wrap it up in San Antonio on Sunday in Game 5 if they can win Thursday.
