ByByBrianMahoney TheAssociatedPress MIAMI KawhiLeonardandSan Antonio Spurs shot their way into history — and back into the lead in the NBA Finals. Leonard scored a career-high 29 points, and the Spurs made a finals-record 75.8 percent of their shots in the first half in a 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night that gave them a 2-1 lead. The Spurs made 19 of their first 21 shots and finished 25 of 33 in the first half, bettering the 75 per- cent shooting by Orlando against the Lakers in the 2009 finals. They led by as much as 25 and were only briefly challenged in their second lopsided victory in the series. Unlike Game 1, when they didn't pull away until the final minutes, the Spurs were way ahead before halftime in this one. Returning to the arena where they were oh-so-close to winning a fifth championship last year, the Spurs came out playing like they were trying to build a lead that was impossible to blow. They shot 13 of 15 in building a 41-25 lead after one, then hit their first six shots of the second in front of a stunned crowd in Mi- ami while going ahead 55-30. Leonard scored only 18 points in the first two games, looking frustrated while getting into foul trouble trying to defend James in Game 2. But he had his outside shot working early, and the effect on the Spurs' offense was obvious. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had 22 points for the Heat, who host Game 4 on Thursday. By Antonio Gonzalez The Associated Press OAKLAND Bob Welch, the 1990 AL Cy Young Award winner of the Oak- land Athletics and the last major leaguer to win at least 25 games in a season, has died. He was 57. Welch died Monday night at his home in Seal Beach, the team said Tuesday. Police said officers re- sponded to a call for medical aid and found Welch dead in the bathroom area. An autopsy was done and the cause of death is pending. "He was a legendary pitcher who enjoyed many of his best seasons with the Oakland A's," A's President Michael Crowley said in a statement. "He will always be a significant part of our franchise's history." Welch was an admitted alcoholic early in his career and spent time in rehabilitation. He co-authored a book in 1981 with George Vecsey about his addiction titled "Five O'Clock Comes Early: A Ballplayer's Battle With Al- coholism." "The fact is, I'm crazy when I'm drunk," Welch said in the book. "There's every chance I would have been dead by now if I was drinking." The right-hander played on five teams that reached the World Series (1978, 1981, 1988, 1989 and 1990) and won two titles, one in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and another in 1989 with the A's. At Oakland, Welch figured prom- inently on teams that won three straight AL championships from 1988-90, including the club that swept the San Francisco Giants in the earthquake-interrupted 1989 World Series. Welch finished 211-146 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 seasons with the Dodgers (1978-87) and Athletics (1988-94). He also was the pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won the 2001 World Series and has served as a special instructor for the A's in recent years. "This is a sad day for the entire A's organization," general manager Billy Beane said. What the Baltimore Orioles third baseman didn't expect is that the punishment would be so harsh. Machado received a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine Tuesday for tossing his bat in Sunday's game against Oakland. He has appealed the suspen- sion, which was slated to start immediately. Machado was in the starting lineup Tuesday against Boston. "I don't want to be down for five days," Machado said. "We're just going to go ahead and get that down, and that's it.
