2A Daily News – Tuesday, May 31, 2011 Community people&events Corning resident wins VIP Award The Car Show and Parade in Maxwell is primarily orga- nized by the Maxwell High School Students and they do a tremendous job. All the day’s events are held at Maxwell High School directly next the Rodeo Grounds. This year was the 81st Annual Rodeo in Maxwell. The Friday Knights Car Club left Tehama County for Maxwell entering both the Parade and the Car Show. Relaxing and enjoying the Rodeo and great Chuck Wagon Lunch is just the frosting on the cake. Fourteen Friday Knights’ cars attended this year, including five Corvettes a ‘56 Chevy, a ‘59 Chevy and a Dodge Charger. A ‘40 Ford, a Ford Torino, a Mustang and an M.G.; along with a White on Red Cobra and a Red on White Camaro. It was also noted that there were Five Generations of the White Family traveling with the Friday Knights Car Club; Great-Great Grampa Ernie White, Great-Grampa Gary White, Gramma Liz White Ross, Auntie Amber Ross and 2- year-old Alyssa Hammond. The Friday Knights Car Club won the Club Participation Award; but the real excitement came when Corning resident, 93-year-old Ernie White, won the VIP AWARD which pro- vides him with VIP Status for the 2012 Maxwell Car Show. The VIP Status Winner is awarded the “Special Parking Spot” for their car, which Ernie will be using in 2012 to show off his 1974 Yellow Corvette. He will also receive a one-of-a-kind T-shirt, free lunch, and VIP treatment all day. Congratulations Ernie and Con- gratulations Friday Knights Car Club! Old Fashioned Chili with beans, from the Chico Bean Growers brochure. 2 1/2 lbs ground beef (coarse or chili grind) 1 lb ground lean pork 1 lb any colored beans 5 cups canned tomatoes 1 lb chopped green pepper 1 1/2 tablespoons salad oil 1 1/2 lbs chopped onions 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1/3 cup chili powder 2 tablespoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed Soak beans.(For each pound (2 cups) sorted, washed dry beans, add 10 cups hot water in a pot large enough to permit expansion. Boil 2- 3 minutes. Cover and soak 4-12 hours. Drain off the soak water and rinse beans.) Drain beans and in a 4 quart cook- ing kettle, add enough fresh water to cover beans, then simmer covered until beans are tender (approximately 1 to 1/2 hours). Cattlemen's Association and was co-chairman of the Field Day at the Long Ranch. Saute green pepper in salad oil for 5 minutes, then add onions and cook until tender, stirring often. Add gar- lic and parsley. In a separate skillet, melt butter and saute meat for about 15 minutes. Add meat to the onion mixture, stir in chili powder and cook for 10 minutes. Combine all ingredients, including the spices, in the bean kettle and sim- mer covered for one hour, then uncovered for another 30 minutes. Skim fat from top. Makes 1 1 / 2 gallons.
