With recently started peace efforts stalled, the cautious government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif may be dragged closer to a decision on whether to take on the militants in earnest across a country with a long his- tory of ambiguity when it comes to dealing with mil- itancy. A further weakening of stability in the nuclear power whose tribal regions are already a hotbed of fo- ment could ripple to neigh- boring Afghanistan as in- ternational combat forces prepare to withdraw from that country. "Everywhere is a threat," warned Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. "Every area is a target, ev- ery building is a potential target." Such an attack in Ka- rachi, Pakistan's business center, will likely discour- age foreign investment at a time when its economy is struggling. The Taliban said the as- sault on the Jinnah Inter- national Airport in Kara- chi, Pakistan's largest city, was in revenge for the No- vember killing of the mili- tant group's leader in a U.S. drone strike. In a telephone call to The Associated Press, the group's spokesman, Sha- hidullah Shahid, warned that "such attacks will con- tinue until there is a perma- nent cease-fire." The attack began late Sunday when 10 gunmen, some disguised as police- men, stormed into a sec- tion of the sprawling air- port where a terminal for VIP flights and cargo is lo- cated. They opened fire with machine guns and rocket launchers, sparking a bat- tle with security forces that lasted until around dawn. Heavy gunfire and mul- tiple explosions were heard coming from the terminal amid the fighting. A major fire rose from the airport, illuminating the night in an orange glow as the sil- houettes of jets could be seen. At least some of the gun- men wore the uniform of the Airport Security Force, said an official near the terminal. All the attackers wore vests of explosives, some of which were deto- nated when they were shot at by the police, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The Associated Press PARIS The thousands of locks that cling like barna- cles to the Pont des Arts in Paris have become a sym- bol of danger, rather than love, after a chunk of fenc- ing fell off under their weight. The fencing tumbled late Sunday on the pedes- trian bridge, which crosses the Seine. Thousands of couples have latched pad- locks to the bridge and thrown their keys into the river as symbols of last- ing love, resulting in what some decry as an eyesore. The locks are periodically removed by the city, but spring up ever faster. Deputy mayor Bruno Julliard said the city was already soliciting sugges- tions from artists on what to do to the locks when the fencing collapsed. Officials are hoping to persuade vis- iting lovers to show their undying affection in less disruptive ways. Julliard told BFM tele- vision on Monday possi- ble alternatives included ribbons and — if lovers in- sist upon the padlocks — a dedicated sculpture. "Then there were some radically different ideas. Why not use new technol- ogy so that couples could write each other messages that could be projected somewhere in Paris?" he said. No one was hurt when the approximately 6.5 feet stretch of fencing came down on the Pont des Arts. But Julliard said there are real safety concerns, as the Seine is heavily traveled by tour boats and barges.
