Tomorrowwe Christians celebrate Pentecost, the cli- mactic moment of the Easter Season. But the core of the Easter Season is the few days surround- ing Easter Sunday itself. Within the month of April there is for Chris- tians the most important week in the life of man- kind. Holy week begins on Palm Sunday, the day when Jesus entered Jeru- salem to the shouts of "Ho- sanna" and the waving of palm branches while rid- ing on the foal of a donkey, as prophesied years ear- lier by the prophet Zecha- riah. He came to offer His life in Sacrifice for the sins of the world. He said so to His followers along the way to Jerusalem. Thursday is called Maundy Thursday because of the instruction Jesus gave His followers as they celebrated Passover. Sharing Bread and Wine in celebration of their free- dom from Egyptian slav- ery, Jesus gave them bread saying, "My Body given for You," and wine, "My blood for you." The next morn- ing, Jesus would be on the Cross outside the walls of Jerusalem. And that would have been the sad ending of the story centered around a well-meaning man of God but for the third day mira- cle of His bodily resurrec- tion from the dead. What is unique to the Christian faith, head and shoulders above all reli- gions, is that it centers not on works we do to get to God, but on our relation- ship with God through our Risen Lord. If Jesus had not been raised from the dead, as He foretold, there would be no Christianity. Yes, upon the events of Holy Week our faith stands or falls. You can see why many consider Christian- ity a foolish faith, for it de- pends on the bodily Resurrection of Je- sus. And yet, for two thousand years the celebration of His resurrection continues. Chris- tians break bread and drink wine knowing the Lord is pres- ent with His people and will bodily return as prom- ised. Millions have given up their homes and their lives in His service. Many were eaten alive by wild animals; others were lit- erally turned into torches to light Nero's Coliseum. Were they so foolish to be- lieve a hoax from a few years earlier? What of the empty tomb which even the enemies of Jesus admitted was empty? Had the disci- ples stolen the body, what would have driven away their fear? Why would they have not confessed their deception when their fam- ilies faced dungeon or death? What happened to those fear-filled followers of Christ between the day of His crucifixion and the day we call Pentecost? To this day, lives are be- ing changed by the One called Jesus of Nazareth. Christians were the first to rescue the unwanted chil- dren of Rome. Hospitals and orphanages were or- ganized and built by Chris- tians and that work contin- ues, not for credit before God, but for thanksgiving. From the perspective of many, we who hold to the Bible as the Word of God and place our trust in a Crucified and Risen Je- sus are thought to be slow, dumb, ignorant, unedu- cated or just simply fools. Frankly, it doesn't bother me in the least. I have to admit that the message of Jesus Christ, His blood-bought forgive- ness on the cross, and His promise to return are unbe- lievable, were it not for the Holy Spirit allowing us to believe. But you cannot ar- gue with the changed lives of people who have come to faith in Jesus Christ over the years. As the Apos- tle Paul stated in Romans 15, "We would be the most to be pitied (those poor de- luded fools), had Christ not been raised from the dead." Who but God could have thought of such an amaz- ing week? Call me a fool, but if Je- sus is in fact Risen from the grave, it is utterly foolish not to bow before Him, as Thomas did, and proclaim, "My Lord and My God." Apart from Jesus Christ, what hope do we have to stand before a holy God? The religions of the world suggest trying and trying to please God. Good luck with that! Those who be- lieve in a world of rhythm and pattern and scale and numbers and codes apart from God have more faith than I do. As the story goes, non-life becomes life. Some say cells evolve into fish and snails into per- sons both male and female. Truth is mortals come to life in a God-created explo- sion of eternal matter out- side of time and to eternal life in an explosion of sacri- ficial love. Paul and we who fol- low Jesus may be consid- ered fools in this life. But in the life to come we will not look so foolish. Thank God in Heaven none of us need bear that title for eternity. And thank God on earth we have the fifty days of Easter to let His wisdom soak into our lives. InJuly1982theRev.Dal- las Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt.
