But it was a disguise. The gunmen rounded up every- one in the village center and then started shooting. Altogether, Boko Haram militants slaughtered hun- dreds of people in three villages in the far north- east corner of Nigeria, wit- nesses said Thursday, de- scribing the latest attack by the Islamic extremist group that drew interna- tional attention for the kid- napping of more than 300 schoolgirls. A community leader who witnessed the killings on Monday said residents had pleaded for the military to send soldiers to protect the area after they heard that militants were about to at- tack. The militants arrived in Toyota HiLux pickup trucks — commonly used by the military — and told the civilians they were sol- diers and that they had come "to protect you all," the same tactic used by the group when they kidnapped the girls from a school in the town of Chibok on April 15. "We all thought they were the soldiers whom we earlier reported to that the insurgents might attack us," said the community leader, who spoke on condi- tion of anonymity because he feared for his life. After the militants forced everyone into the vil- lage centers, "they began to shout 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar,' then they started to fire at the people continu- ously for a very long time until all who had gathered were dead," he said. Allahu akbar means God is great. The killings took place in the villages of Danjara, Agapalwa, and Antagara, part of Gwoza district in Borno state. The commu- nity leader said he fled to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, adding that some who escaped the massa- cre crossed into the neigh- boring country of Camer- oon while others remain trapped in the mountain- ous region. "They still see the gun- men going about attacking villages and hamlets by set- ting them on fire," he said. He said managed to sur- vive because "I was going around to inform people that the soldiers had come and they wanted to address us." As people were fleeing, other gunmen lurked out- side the villages on motor- cycles and mowed them down. NIGERIA Wearing disguise, Boko Haram slaughters 300 Tactic same as used in abduction of girls The Associated Press MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK Royal Canadian Mounted Police combed the streets and woods of this normally tranquil city Thursday in search of a man suspected of killing three officers in the deadliest attack on their ranks in nearly a decade. The suspect, armed with high-powered long firearms, was spotted three times while eluding the massive manhunt that emptied roads and kept families hunkered in their homes in Moncton, an east coast city where gun violence is rare. Dozens of police officers could be seen in a part of the search perimeter with their weapons drawn, some glanc- ing around buildings. Oth- ers, including members of a tactical unit, were patrolling streets within the cordoned off area. Armored security trucks were also visible. "Oursearchforthesuspect is still ongoing," RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah told a news conference Thursday after- noon. "Our focus remains in the mountain north area." Farrah urged residents to keep their doors locked. "Stay at home, bar your doors and be vigilant," she said. "I know it's hard for families. You are in your house, you are locked, you have your kids, you want to go outside. But the police are saying to stay in." Police were using air sup- port, tactical teams and ca- nine units, she said. Several hundred officers from New Brunswick and elsewhere from across Canada were involved. "We have deployed a large amount of resources from here and elsewhere, and we are well-equipped to face this situation," Farrah said. The 24-year-old suspect, Justin Bourque, was spot- ted three times around the search area Thursday morn- ing, said Commander Mar- lene Snowman. Bourque was wearing mil- itary camouflage and carry- ing two rifles in a picture re- leased by police on Twitter. At one point, he was seen coming in and out of a wooded area, Snowman said. "He's capable of mov- ing into the wooded area and out," she said. Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting Wednesday eve- ning, in which three officers were killed while responding to a call about an armed man at the north end of Monc- ton. Two other officers were wounded. Police declined to identify the dead or injured officers. It was the deadliest at- tack on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police since four officers were killed by a gun- man on a farm in the western CanadianprovinceofAlberta in 2005. That attack remains thedeadliestonCanadianpo- lice officers in 120 years. CANADA Hunt on for gunman at large By Josef Federman The Associated Press JERUSALEM Israel gave the final go-ahead Thursday to build nearly 1,500 homes in Jewish settlements, saying the construction was a re- sponse to the formation of the Palestinian unity govern- ment backed by the Islamic militant group Hamas. The move triggered inter- national criticism and deep- ened a rift between Israel and its Western allies. With Israel outraged at the world's embrace of the unity govern- ment, Israel's housing minis- ter said the new construction was "just the beginning." Israel has been sparring with its allies in Washington and Europe since Western- backed Palestinian President MahmoudAbbassworeinthe unity government Monday. Israel has asked the world to shun the new govern- ment because it is backed by Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in sui- cide bombings and other attacks in the past two de- cades. The European Union and the United States, along with Israel, consider Hamas a terrorist group. Abbas says Hamas plays no formal role in the govern- ment. His new Cabinet con- sists of technocrats who have accepted international de- mands to renounce violence and accept Israel's right to exist. None of the men have any affiliation with Hamas. Israeli officials say any government that is backed by Hamas is unacceptable as long as the group remains sworn to Israel's destruction. Butfornow,boththeU.S.and EU have said they will give thenewgovernmentachance — and will continue funnel- ing hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Abbas. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netan- yahusaidhewas"deeplytrou- bled" by the U.S. stance, put- tinghimatoddswithhis clos- est and most important ally. The international commu- nity considers Israeli settle- ment construction illegal or illegitimate, and contin- ued construction was a re- curring sticking point in the latest round of U.S.-backed peace talks. The sides made little progress in nine months of talks that collapsein April.
