Friday, May 27, 2011 – Daily News 5A Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Corning Elementary selected for Stanford Leadership Network The Corning Union Elementary School District is one of seven school districts in California selected to participate in the Stanford University Eng- lish Language Learner Leadership Network. Stanford University Professor Kinji Hakuta and his team of researchers visited Corning Elementary to see first hand what the district has been doing to improve the achievement of English language learners. “Stanford University is on the cutting edge of research into language acquisition in our country, Superintendent Steve Kelish said. “Our invita- tion to join this leadership network will allow Corning Elementary to share our successes and challenges and to hear from others what is working and what is not working as we strive to improve the language skills of our Eng- lish language learners.” A team from Corning, consisting of Megan Neely, West Street Princi- pal and the District Coordinator of English Language Development, Dave Sweringen, Principal of Olive View and the District Migrant Education Coordinator, and new Superintendent Catherine Reimer will be meeting throughout the year with educational leaders from seven other districts and Stanford University to study best practices in language instruction and research into how children learn English language. “We are delighted to be selected to participate in such a highly respect- ed program with Dr. Hakuta and his team from Stanford,” Neely said. “The work we are doing in Corning and the opportunity to learn from others will allow us to grow our English Language Development program into one of the best program in the state.” The Stanford ELL Leadership Network is funded by a grant from the S.H. Cowell Foundation in San Francisco. The Corning team will meet at Stanford University in early August to begin their work with the leadership network.
