When agents tried to contact those inside, the vehicle suddenly stopped and two people fled into Mexico. Agents say they found 3,200pounds of marijuana stashed in the truck worth an estimated $1.6million. BUSTED AT THE BORDER U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PATROL WASHINGTON A half dozen key law- makers were struggling Wednesday to quickly craft a compromise bill to help veteransfacinglongappointmentwaitsat VAhospitalsandmakeiteasiertofiread- ministrators who covered up the delays. The goal is to address an uproar over Veterans Administration health care following allegations that veterans have died while waiting to see a VA doctor. Senators hope to pass the bill before Friday's 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe in World War II. Leading the negotiations were Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Repub- lican presidential candidate in 2008, and independent Sen. Bernie Sand- ers of Vermont, chairman of the Sen- ate Veterans Affairs Committee and the only self-described socialist in Congress. They met face to face early Wednesday and again later in the day. Sanders acknowledged he and Mc- Cain make an unlikely pair, but he was upbeat about the prospects of reaching a deal. "I'm cautiously optimistic," he said in an interview. "McCain is seri- ous, I'm serious and Reid is serious." VETERANS ADMINISTRATION McCain,Sanderspushfor VA health care compromise BILLINGS, MONT. The Montana Su- preme Court will censure a state judge and suspend him without pay for 31 days for saying a 14-year-old rape victim was "older than her chronological age." Justices said in Wednesday's opin- ion that Judge G. Todd Baugh of Bill- ings eroded confidence in the court system with his actions in the case of convicted rapist and former teacher Stacey Dean Rambold. "There is no place in the Montana judiciary for perpetuating the stereo- type that women and girls are respon- sible for sexual crimes committed against them," Chief Justice Mike Mc- Grath wrote. Baugh, 72, is ordered to appear be- fore the court July 1 for a public cen- sure. The judge, who is the son of for- mer Washington Redskins quarter- back "Slingin' Sammy" Baugh, sent Rambold to prison for just 30 days last year after he pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse without consent. Prosecu- tors appealed, and the Supreme Court in April ordered a new sentencing in the case by a different judge. Baugh has apologized for his ac- tions and plans to retire when his term expires in December. LEGAL Court to censure Montana judge over rape comments SALEM,ORE. The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to halt same-sex weddings in Oregon while a federal ap- peals court considers whether a group opposed to gay marriage can intervene in the case. The order follows an emergency ap- peal by the National Organization for Marriage that seeks to overturn U.S. District Judge Michael McShane's May 19 ruling that declared Oregon's same-sex marriage ban unconstitu- tional. The group had unsuccessfully tried to intervene in the lower court proceeding after Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum declined to defend the same-sex ban. The group filed its request with Justice Anthony Kennedy and he re- ferred it to the full court, which de- nied the request without comment. The Oregon case differs from oth- ers where the justices blocked same- sex unions while appeals work their way through the courts. In Oregon, the appeal is focused on whether an outside group can intervene in the case, not on the constitutionality of the same-sex marriage ban. The state has said it won't appeal Mc- Shane's ruling. MARRIAGE EQUALITY High Court refuses to block Oregon same-sex unions NEW YORK J.K. Rowling added a sub- tle comment under her pen name Rob- ert Galbraith on Wednesday about the standoff between her publisher and Amazon.com. The "Harry Potter" author noted in a tweet from @rgalbraith that there are "lots of ways to order" her novel "The Silkworm" in the U.S., as "Amazon kindly suggest(s)." Rowl- ing spokeswoman Rebecca Salt con- firmed that the twitter account was authentic. Amazon is in a contract dispute with Rowling's U.S. publisher, Ha- chette Book Group, and isn't accept- ing pre-orders for "The Silkworm" and other Hachette releases. "The Silkworm," Rowling's second Gal- braith detective novel, is out June 19. Hachette authors James Patter- son and Sherman Alexie and non-Ha- chette author John Green are among those who have strongly criticized the Seattle-based online retailer. Ama- zon has suggested negotiations will be prolonged and customers in the mean- time can buy Hachette books from its competitors. As of late Monday after- noon, "The Silkworm" was No. 10 on Barnes & Noble.com. PUBLISHING JK Rowling: 'Lots of ways' to order book besides Amazon FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ. The last of the 29 Navajos who developed a code that stumped the Japanese during World War II has died. Chester Nez, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Wednesday morning of kidney failure, said Judy Avila, who helped Nez write his memoirs. He was 93. Before hundreds of men from the Na- vajo Nation became Code Talkers, 29 Navajos were recruited to develop the code based on the then-unwritten Na- vajo language. Nez was in 10th grade when he enlisted, keeping his decision a secret from his family and lying about his age, as did many others. "It's one of the greatest parts of his- tory that we used our own native lan- guage during World War II," Nez told The Associated Press in 2010. "We're very proud of it." Of the 250 Navajos who showed up at Fort Defiance, Arizona, — then a U.S. Army base — 29 were selected to join the first all-Native American unit of Ma- rines. They were inducted in May 1942. Nez became part of the 382nd Platoon. Using Navajo words for red soil, war chief, clan, braided hair, beads, ant and hummingbird, for example, they came up with a glossary of more than 200 terms that later was expanded and an alphabet. Nez has said he was concerned the code wouldn't work. At the time, few non-Navajos spoke the language. Even Navajos who did couldn't understand the code. It proved impenetrable. "The Japanese did everything in their power to break the code but they never did," Nez said in 2010. After World War II, Nez volunteered to serve two more years during the Ko- rean War. He retired in 1974 after a 25- year career as a painter at the Veterans hospital in Albuquerque.
