The program, featur- ing the fifty-voice Mas- terworks Chorale and Orchestra, will be filled with songs that cele- brate and honor God, the United States of America, and the men and women of the Armed Force. The Masterworks Chorale is a volunteer choral ensemble that began in 1996 to bring good choral music to the people of Tehama Coun- ty. Singers come from Tehama and Shasta Counties for the love of good singing and to pre- pare concerts for the community to enjoy. The Chorale first pre- sented Messiah by G.F.Handel at Christmas time and has continued to perform major choral works in three or four concerts each year. This weekend concert is will be the Chorale’s fifth Memorial Day Cel- ebration. This is an important day when as a people we remember the men and women who serve in the armed forces. Arts & entertainment Patriotic concert on tap Clapp named May artist of the month By ARLENE WINSLOW Red Bluff Art Associa- tion's artist of the month for May is Chrissie Hamilton Clapp, who was recently elected vice president. “It’s exciting to see just what Chrissie will bring to each of our weekly painting ses- sions. She is very connected and full of ideas. It’s going to be a learning year for RBAA and I can’t wait,” said President Connie Maxey. Clapp Chrissie has enjoyed cre- ativity throughout her life. She was born in Taft, the second of four daughters. Her mother was a gifted cel- list and the first woman to play with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Her father was a physicist with many patents on warheads and weapons. Raised in China Lake, her parents performed and the family sang as a group for many years. Music was their predom- inant area of creativity with all members performing; however, the previous gen- eration all did handwork. Following in her ancestors footsteps, Chrissie’s first jobs were teaching embroi- dery, macramé and weav- ing. Her first experiences in fine art concerned the battle to have handwork of women honored as a fine art. For 5 years Chrissie worked with internationally acclaimed artist Judy Chica- go. She com- pleted 3 major works for “The Birth Project” and assisted with others. Chrissie expanded the work she was doing in fiber arts and added knowledge of almost any- thing you could create with your hands. She dabbled in basketry, wood- working, bone carving, miniatures, pottery, glass bead making, jewelry and many other endeavors. Chrissie states she is a jack- of-all-trades, but master of few. Anything she learned, she immediately wanted to teach to someone else. She worked as a teacher in many different fields for over 40 years. She was selected as Teacher of the Year multiple times. She is retired, but still loves to teach. Aspiring to draw and paint, she sought out instructors and set herself to develop this skill. Chrissie now feels confident in her paintings which she sells locally and has donated many to charities. Chrissie states, “Each painting is an exercise in hard work. It is not talent or a gift. It is per- sistence!” She has recently taken up watercolor again after not painting for ten years. Next she is deter- mined to do acrylics, pas- tels, and then oils.
