ShadedareasaboveatWhiskeytownRecreationAreawillbeclosedthroughJuly18. UntilapproximatelyJuly 18, portions of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will close as the park im- plements the Boulder Creek Forest Restoration project. A map of closure areas is posted at the Visitor Center, on http://www.nps.gov/whis and at areas in the park. The following are closed during this period: Campsite: The primitive campsite at Boulder Creek. Roads: Mill Creek Road, from South Shore Drive. Trails: The Boulder Creek Trail between the South Shore Drive and Mill Creek Road trailheads; Mill Creek Trail between the Mill Creek Road Trailhead and the three-way intersection ad- jacent to Mill Creek; and the Papoose Pass Trail at the Papoose Pass cutoff. Boul- der Creek Falls will not be accessible. The project will restore some 46 acres of forest and oak woodland in the Boulder Creek watershed through the use of small-scale log- ging. Park staff have collab- orated with Humboldt State University and University of Montana and determined that the combination of fire suppression and timber ex- traction has transformed these plant communities into an unnaturally dense condi- tion. Check http://www.nps. gov/whis for up-to-date in- formation about closures. This comes as a result of Assembly Bill X1 29, which was signed into law July 7, 2011 establishing a fee for fire prevention services in the 31 million acres of State Responsibility Area. The revenue generated from the fee pays for fire pre- vention services within the this area. Services include fuel reduction activities, de- fensible space inspections, fire prevention engineer- ing, emergency evacuation planning, prevention edu- cation, fire hazard severity mapping, implementation of state and local plans and fire related law enforcement ac- tivities such as cause deter- mination and arson investi- gation. Cal Fire has a website, www.FirePreventionFee. org, which contains informa- tion about the fee and links to maps, the law language, and answers frequently asked questions. Acus- tomer service call center (1- 888-310-6447) is open week- days 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to aid homeowners who have ques- tions about the Fire Preven- tion Fee. The Board of Equalization is responsible for fee collec- tion. Bills scheduled for mail- ing this spring are for fiscal year 2013/14 — July 1, 2013 to June 30. The fee applies to the homeowner of record as of July 1, 2013, for all hab- itable structures within the SRA. Bill mailing began al- phabetically March 3. TAXES Mailing of fire fee bills began in early March WEDDING BARGAINS: When I worked in a bridal shop in Florida, we bought all of our jewelry, gloves, veils and most headpieces wholesale from Accessory Wholesale in New Orleans. To my surprise, they now have a website (awnol.com) that is open to the public. For my own wedding, I bought all my bridesmaids jewelry sets, bracelets, my headpiece and my gloves and jewelry — all for about $100 including shipping. That site rocks! And I swear this is the same stuff we bought, put in our lit cases on black velvet and sold for 5 to 8 times the wholesale price. All salons do this. Accessories offer their greatest profit margin. Note: This is a wholesale company, so there is a minimum order requirement of $75. — Kelly B. PLAY 'N ERASE: I pull all sorts of worksheets, fun sheets and thinking sheets out of children's magazines and kids' worksheets I find online that are printable. I slip them into plastic protective pages I get at the office supply store (about $5 for a big package). I put the worksheets into the plastic sleeves. My kids use dry erase markers to learn and play. When done, we erase their work so we can use the fun papers over and over again. — Stephanie A. DISH SOAP: I found several uses for Dawn dishwashing detergent. I found that not only does it do a great job with dishes, but it is also a great and safe pesticide, lubricant for jammed drawers and a flea dip for dogs. I have saved a lot of cash by using blue Dawn in place of other higher-priced products. — Michelle P. COOL CUTTING BOARDS: If your family uses Cool Whip in recipes, you have a lot of extra Cool Whip bowls around the house. Cool Whip bowl lids make great mini cutting boards. The plastic won't harm your knives, they're the perfect size for cutting a tomato or a green pepper, the lip around the edge catches any juices, they wash very well in your dishwasher's top rack, and if they ever get nasty looking, just throw them out. Also, you can use the bowl (without the lid) as a baby toy. Babies, especially those 6 months to a year, love playing with these bowls. — Beth B. KID-FRIENDLY BBQ SAUCE: Instead of buying expensive bottles of BBQ sauce, here is an inexpensive and delicious one you can make at home. Pour Ketchup in a bowl and add Coca-Cola to desired sauce consistency. That's it! Marinate your meat of choice and cook. It's delicious! — Molly S.
