Staffreports CORNING TheTehama-Glennunit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection will conduct a prescribed burn Thurs- day on Merill's Landing Wildlife Area about four miles south of South Avenue near Corning and along the Sacramento River. The burn requested by the Cal- ifornia Department of Fish and Wildlife will "reduce unwanted bio- mass, control the spread of weeds, and help provide better conditions for native grasses that will be planted in the area," according to a Cal Fire news release. Measure A was receiving 51.16 percent of the initial vote total re- leased by the Tehama County Elec- tion's Department Tuesday night. The measure asked Tehama County voters if the Board of Su- pervisors should adopt a Declara- tion of Support for the proposed State of Jefferson and separation from California. Although only an advisory mea- sure, the Tehama County Board of Supervisors has previously stated it would follow the wishes of vot- ers. The Tehama County Clerk De- partment issued its first count shortly after the polls closed Tues- day. The count is of vote-by-mail ballots received before Tuesday. It accounts for about 18 percent of all registered voters. County Clerk Bev Ross said she expected voter turnout would not reach 50 percent and said she had heard reports of light numbers at polling places. Tehama County voters also weighted in on two more county- wide measures. A measure that would amend the County Charter to allow for local control in situations where there is a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors was passing with 61.89 percent of the vote. Previously the governor made appointments. Chairman Steve Chamblin said timely appointments are necessary not just for the votes required at board meetings, but for the repre- sentation a supervisor has on other committees. "I think it would be great for lo- cal control," he said. Candy Carlson had 263 votes and Mitch- ell Drury had 237 votes. District Attorney Gregg Co- hen also appeared to be headed toward a victory. Cohen had received 3,011 votes, while his challenger Larry Olsen had 2,164 votes. In one of the more hotly con- tested races Charles Allen had 2,700 votes to lead Harley North with 2,324 votes for county su- perintendent of schools.
