The only person it seemed would beat Thayer, would be herself. As it turned out by the time the discus event started, Thayer was already a sec- tion champion and had her trip booked to Fresno. That's because Thayer pulled a mild upset an hour earlier in the shot put, defeating defending section champion Marisela Cardenas. Thayer, who qualified for the section championships three straight years in both the discus and shot put, finally put everything together on the biggest day of the season. Early in the competition Thayer put out a season best put of 37 feet, 3 inches. It was enough to hold off Cardenas, who managed 37 feet, 0.75 inches on her final put to take second. From the time Thayer first let go of that section winning put she was all smiles for the rest of the day. Put after put, discus throw after throw, Thayer's smile beamed in be- tween and during two trips to the po- dium. It was the complete opposite range of emotions Thayer showed during her sophomore year, when she more or less beat herself for a section title in the dis- cus. That year she finished fifth with her best stuff eluding her and it allowed her Lady Spartan teammate Meggan Rec- tor to sneak in and grab the discus title to go along with her own shot put cham- pionship. This year Thayer pulled the double herself. She made sure that discus title was hers with a 115-foot toss her first round, better than any other girl in the North- ern Section had accomplished this sea- son. Thayer kept pushing herself and while she didn't match the school record 133 feet, 8 inches she produced earlier this year,herdiscusthrowof126feet,3inches TRACK & FIELD Thayerwinssection shotput, discustitles Alvardo medals for Corning in long jump, 200 meters RedBluff'sKaylaThayerputsherfirstplacemedalinshotputaroundherneckFridayattheNorthernSection'strackandfield championships held in Cottonwood by West Valley High School. That's what bringing in so many other veterans who have Super Bowl experience like Woodson can do. Woodson is part of a rebuilt de- fense in Oakland that includes new- comers like Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley, Antonio Smith, Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown, who all know what it takes to succeed in the NFL. "I feel like I'm getting younger out there anyway. I feel good," Woodson said. "Bringing in those guys brings in credibility. I look forward to playing with those guys this season." The injection of veteran lead- ership on a defense that allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history in 2013 was part of a plan to end a run of 11 straight seasons without a play- off berth or winning record that started in Woodson's first stint in Oakland. Woodson said he has already seen the impact of the newcomers in improved communication and understanding of the defense dur- ing offseason workouts.
