ON THE AIR By Dan Gelston The Associated Press DOVER, DEL. Brad Kes- elowski is getting used to racing out front, turning a track-record lap of 164.444 mph to win the pole at Do- ver International Speedway. Keselowski won his sec- ond pole of the season Fri- day on the mile track and fifth of his career. He also has six starts from second this season, making him one of the top front-row per- formers in NASCAR. "It's been a good year for qualifying," Keselowski said, "And I would say most years, that has not been the case." Keselowski and his Team Penske teammate Joey Lo- gano have figured out fast qualifying in their Fords. Kyle Busch starts second, and Logano, eight-time Do- ver winner Jimmie John- son and rookie Kyle Larson of Elk Grove round out the top five for Sunday's race. Series points leader Jeff Gordon was sixth, followed by Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers and Clint Bowyer. Bowyer turned 35 on Friday. With only 43 cars en- tered, every driver quali- fied for the 400-mile race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was knocked out in the first round by less than a second by A.J. Allmendinger as the session wound down. Other stars who failed to advance out of the first round in- cluded Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, and Tony Stewart. Danica Patrick also did not advance and starts 28th. "We've got all kinds of time on Sunday," Patrick said. Keselowski has a win and five top-10s this season. His previous pole at Phoenix netted him a third-place finish. He credited Ford for help- ing the No. 2 find the speed it needed to boost its quali- fying efforts. "I don't think we were far off before, we just needed those little pieces that were outside of our control to be evened up," he said. "I feel like that is the case now and we are where we should be." It was the eighth time this season a track record was set at qualifying. NASCAR SPRINT CUP Keselowski wins pole at Dover The Associated Press BOSTON A.J. Pierzynski hit an RBI triple in the bot- tom of the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox — on their fourth manager of the night following a string of ejections — beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 Friday in the latest testy game between the teams on a wild evening at Fenway Park. Jonny Gomes fittingly reached base by being hit by a pitch, a common theme that led to one bench-clear- ing scrum and nearly as many ejections as runs scored. Juan Carlos Oviedo (1- 2) plunked Gomes with one out in the 10th and Pierzyn- ski followed with a drive to the triangle in right-center, where the ball landed be- tween Wil Myers and Des- mond Jennings. ROYALS6,BLUEJAYS1 Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain homered, and Kansas City beat Toronto. TWINS 6, YANKEES 1 Ricky Nolasco pitched six solid innings for his first win in more than a month, and Minnesotaflexedsomemus- cle in beating New York. ASTROS 2, ORIOLES 1 Jona- than Villar broke an 0-for- 26 slump with a go-ahead RBI double and Houston ex- tended its winning streak to seven games. NationalLeague BRAVES 3, MARLINS 2 Ju- lio Teheran pitched 7 1/3 in- nings and scored the tying run in the seventh to help Atlanta move a game ahead of Miami atop the NL East. BREWERS 11, CUBS 5 Ryan Braun homered to highlight a five-run first inning and Milwaukee beat Chicago. BASEBALL ROUNDUP Red Sox defeat Rays in 10th Battershitbypitches leads to scuffles, string of ejections plays today, as the highest- seeded player in the draw at No. 4. It also leaves 2012 French Open champion Ma- ria Sharapova as the favor- ite after her 6-0, 6-0 rout Friday. The woman who beat Williams, Garbine Mu- guruza of Spain, also ad- vanced to the fourth round. Federer and Djokovic, though, were expected to win, and they did. Tursunov, with an 0-4 record against Federer heading into the match, wasn't, and he didn't. "Overall, the first two sets ... I felt that it was a fairly even battle out there," said Tursunov, who was broken only once in the first two sets. "It's hard for me to predict, but definitely play- ing on one leg is not going to make things easier. Tough luck for me, but hopefully I'll get him somewhere else." It's still not completely clear what happened to the 31st-seeded Tursunov, but it most certainly led to a bit of a meltdown a few minutes later. "It was right after the changeover of the second set," he said. "We sat down and then got up and then he was serving, and then right after the first serve was kind of like, 'Something is not right."' Federer broke Tursunov in that opening game, and led 2-1 at the first change- over. Tursunov called for a trainer, and started to lose his cool. He screamed at the chair umpire, yelling "start using your brain," while an- grily mixing his personal purple drink. A medical trainer came out and chat- ted with the Russian while he continued fiddling with the plastic bottle and a fun- nel. Finally, Tursunov left the court and headed for a training room in the bowels of Court Philippe Chatrier. Meanwhile, out on the red clay of the main stadium, Federer was practicing his serves, drawing some bois- terous shouts of "Ole" from the waiting crowd. When Tursunov finally returned, the match was in Federer's hands. "Where I felt it the most was that he struggled to re- turn the serve, the reaction, left and right was maybe missing a little bit," Federer said. "But in terms of play- ing aggressive tennis, that he was able to do normally, in my opinion." The problem for Tur- sunov, however, was that aggressive tennis wasn't enough on this day. "I like how I'm play- ing against him. Hoping to improve," Tursunov said, again thinking ahead to a possible sixth meeting. "Hoping to give him more difficulties for the next cou- ple years, hopefully." French FROM PAGE 1 Miami, which trailed 9-2 before ripping off 54 of the next 75 points to erase any doubt by halftime. The Heat set a franchise record with their 11th straight home postseason win, going back to the final two games of last season's NBA Finals, lead- ing by 37 at one point. Indiana led the East for much of the regular sea- son, one where the Pacers were fueled by the memory of losing Game 7 of the East finals in Miami a year ago. So they spent this season with a clear goal: Toppling Miami as kings of the East. The Pacers were two games better in the regu- lar season. They were two games worse in the postseason. Game 7, this time, would have been in Indianapolis. The Pacers just had no shot of making it happen, not on this night. So now, the Celtics and Lakers have some company. Until Friday, they were the only teams in NBA his- tory to reach the Finals in four straight years. The Heat have joined them, and their quest for a third straight title starts in either San Antonio or Oklahoma City on Thursday night. The way they played in Game 6 made a prophet out of Bosh, who predicted Miami would play its best game of the season. The numbers suggested he was right, and then some. Miami's largest lead at any point this season, before Game 6, was 36 points. In- diana's largest deficit of the season had been 35 points. After a layup by James with 3:39 left in the third, the margin in this one was a whopping 37 — 86-49. James' night ended not long afterward.
