Saturday, May 21, 2011 – Daily News 7A No budging as Obama, Netanyahu talk peace WASHINGTON (AP) — Indicating no progress toward peace, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sat alongside President Barack Obama on Friday and declared that Israel would not withdraw to 1967 borders to help make way for an adjacent Palestinian state. Obama had called on Israel to be willing to do just that a day earlier. The Israeli leader said he would make some con- cessions but Israel would not go back to the lines from decades earlier because they would be ‘‘indefensible.’’ For his part, Obama said that there were differ- ences of formulations and language but that such disputes are going to hap- pen ‘‘between friends.’’ The president never mentioned the 1967 bor- ders as the two men talked with reporters. The lead- ers spoke after a lengthy meeting in the Oval Office, amid tense times. Obama said in his speech on Thursday that the United States supports creation of a Palestinian state based on the border lines that existed before the 1967 Six Day War in which Israel forces occu- The World Famous Palomino Room 1/2 off Lunch or Dinner entrée with purchase of 1 entrée must present coupon *equal or lesser value Lunch: Tues-Fri 11am-2pm Dinner: Thurs-Sat 4pm-9pm 723 Main St., Red Bluff 527-5470 www.palominoroom.com WORLD BRIEFING maid. in 2008. The comment on 1967 borders drew angry criti- cism in Israel, and Netanyahu made clear after meeting with Obama that the idea was unac- ceptable. Since taking office in January 2009, Obama has boosted corporate fuel economy standards, put billions of stimulus dol- lars into renewable energy projects and worked to limit greenhouse gas emissions. In March, Obama called for a one- third reduction of oil imports by 2025. al-Qaida talked of blowing up oil tankers WASHINGTON (AP) — Osama bin Laden’s per- sonal files revealed a brazen idea to hijack oil tankers and blow them up at sea last summer, creat- ing explosions he hoped would rattle the world’s economy and send oil prices skyrocketing, the U.S. said Friday. The newly disclosed plot showed that while bin Laden was always schem- ing for the next big strike that would kill thousands of Americans, he also believed a relatively sim- pler attack on the oil indus- try could create a world- wide panic that would hurt Westerners every time they gassed up their cars. U.S. officials said the tanker idea, included in documents found in the compound where bin Laden was killed nearly three weeks ago, was little more than an al-Qaida fan- tasy. But the FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a confiden- tial warning to police and the energy industry Friday. The alert, obtained by The Associated Press, said that al-Qaida had sought infor- mation on the size and con- struction of oil tankers, had decided that spring and summer provided the best weather to approach the ships, had determined that blowing them up would be easiest from the inside and believed an explosion would create an ‘‘extreme economic crisis.’’ ‘‘We are not aware of indications of any specific or imminent terrorist attack plotting against the oil and natural gas sector overseas or in the United States,’’ Homeland Secu- rity spokesman Matthew Chandler said in a state- ment Friday. ‘‘However, in 2010 there was contin- uing interest by members of al-Qaida in targeting oil tankers and commer- cial oil infrastructure at sea.’’ $50 off your 1st ✪ Auto Detailing ✪ Water Spot Removal Ask about visit Presented by the Happy Valley Community Foundation.
