It is so well written you may not want to put it down. Jane Eyre by Emily Bronte is another excellent book full of intel- lectual and stimulating quips between the protagonist and antag- onist. Perhaps you prefer more modern books like Fried Green Tomatoes or Standing in the Rain- bow by Fanny Flagg or Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. Or, maybe you are more of a film fanatic with your favorite movie stars like Sean Connery, Sandra Bullock, Kathy Bates, or Kung Fu for action film fans. Whoever our favorite author or actor is when we become aware we are reaching the end, we may feel a little twinge of regret that it has to be over. We can reread books or watch the same movie as many times as we want. But some things in life need to come to an end without us continuing to cling to their ideas. Dr Henry Cloud in his book Necessary Endings, likens life and business to growing rosebushes. He says there are three major principles for suc- cess. 1) "Rosebushes and other plants produce more buds than the plant can sustain." Therefore the experi- enced gardener will cut back good branches so that excellent branches can grow. Jesus teaches that the good is the enemy of the best in Luke 10:41-42. 2) "Some branches are sick or diseased and are not going to make it." Though the gardener may nur- Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, Overland Park, Kan.: One of the first duties given in the Bible is for Adam to "tend and protect" the Garden of Eden. As the world's first "superpower," it fell to him to be the steward of God's creation. This verse is often applied to environmental issues, but does it not apply to the social ecology of humanity? With power comes great responsibility, and those who choose to enjoy the fruits of power have special responsibility for others. "It comes with the territory." In the Talmudic tractate Pirkei Avot (Values of our Ancestors), Hillel said: "In a place where there are no men, be the man." In another passage, Hillel is often misquoted as saying: "If I'm not for myself who will be for me, but if I'm for myself alone what am I?" The Hebrew more literally translates as: "If I'm not for myself, who will be for me, and being for myself what am I?" In other words, what does it mean to advocate for yourself? A wise person knows that, in any calculation, the best self advo- cacy is one that takes the concern for others as paramount. This is the paradigm for enlightened self- interest , and the mistranslation is actually a profound interpretation ture them for a while at some point he realizes they also need to be cut off. Jesus teaches us to focus on what is important over what is a sentimental attachment in Luke 9:57- 62. 3) "Then there are branches and buds that are dead and taking up space." The wise gardener cuts away those dead ones so they do not suck the life out of the rest. Jesus teaches that white washed sepul- chers are a snare to the liv- ing in Matthew 23:1-36. Most of us don’t like endings. If we don’t realize they are part of God’s plan for life, we will fight to hold onto something we need to release. We can hold onto unhealthy relationships, a dying business, or unproductive employees so long that they begin to suck the energy out of what we are attempting to accomplish. We spend countless hours trying to make a sickly plant be what it can never be. As a result, we miss the new beginning God has for us. We can see this principle in the Bible. In the Old Testament, Tem- ple workers had to step down after a certain age to make room for younger men (Numbers 8:23-26). In the New Testament, Mary and Joseph had to leave friends and family when they fled to Egypt (Mathew 2:15). In the book of Acts, Paul and Barnabas’ ministry togeth- er had to come to an end so that of what Hillel truly meant. Hillel completes his statement with a call to action: "If not now, when?" Indeed. A LIGHT FOR THE NATIONS The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Christian Church, Olathe: Does America have a special role to play? Absolutely. America is a city set on a hill, a light for the nations. But not just the U.S.; God's Earth is filled with cities set on hills. From Honolulu to Hanoi, from New York to Nairobi, every culture has gifts to offer. Americans bring to the world table an enlightened view of the God could spread the gospel faster and farther than it had up to that point (Acts 15). If we are afraid of endings, if we see them as failures, we will stay in relationships past the time we should. Healthy relationships become unhealthy ones. Once, profitable businesses begin to lose profits. Abusive relationships Dr. Shirley Faye GodTalk well. become more abusive. But if we accept the fact that endings are a natural part of life, we will be able to make the healthy choices. Making the dif- ficult decisions will not only benefit us, they will help others to move on to their new beginnings as God’s endings produce new beginnings. The Disciples were devastated when Jesus had to die on the cross. They had no idea how great an adventure was in store for them compared to what they had known to this point. Let’s not miss out on what God has in store for us by holding on too long to what clearly needs to come to an end. Dr. Shirley Fay is a Christian psychotherapist and pastoral counselor in practice in Red Bluff for many years. She can be reached through Bethel Church in Red Bluff. It is a pleasure to welcome her back to our rotation after a brief hiatus. Voices of Faith: Does the U.S. have a special role in protecting humanity? Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of value of every person and an unwavering belief in human goodness and potential. Long before President John F. Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon, President Abra- ham Lincoln appealed, during the darkest days of our union, to "the better angels of our nature," calling us to rise above our divisions, to live as friends and not enemies. Lincoln was followed by the likes of Jane Addams, the founder of modern social work. Born into privilege in the 1860s, Addams spent much of her life on the tough streets of Chicago working with the poor- est of the poor, not because she pitied them, but because they were created in God's image and essential to the community. "Every human being is a cre- ative agent and a possible gen- erator of fine enthusiasm," she wrote. At times, though, the indi- vidualism and accomplishments we celebrate border on idolatry. We need the witness of cultures where the focus, from health to wealth, is on the community. Every country, every culture, has a special role to play.
