14 UCW SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 6, 2009
This is a reminder regarding the
upcoming solid waste disposal bans on
wooden pallets, oil filters and plastic
bottles, effective Oct. 1. By now,
businesses across the state should be
making plans for the diversion of these
materials from disposal through the
initiation of waste reduction and recycling
prog rams.
Assistance on how to star t or expand
recycling effor ts can be found at: www.
p2pays.org/BannedMaterials/index.asp
or through calling the N.C. Division of
Pollution Prevention & Environmental
Assistance at 919-715-6500.
Below are some basic tips to help
businesses get star ted:
Recycling plastic bottles
1. Procure an outlet or a recycling service
for the collected bottles. Ask your cur rent
hauler or an independent recycling company
what services they can offer. Check in with
your local county or municipal gover nment
to also see if they have services (such as
drop-off centers) you can use for recycling
the bottles.
2. Install collection points for capturing
the bottles and educate employees, customers
and other users of your facilities about
recycling oppor tunities.
Recycling oil filters
1. Procure oil filter recycling services by
consulting with your existing oil handler or
through the listings under : www.p2pays.org/
dmr m/star t.aspx?id=171
2. Educate employees on how to use the
filter recycling collection set up through the
service provider.
Reducing and recycling pallets
1. Examine ways in which pallets may
be eliminated from use or possibly reused
inside your business or with other companies.
Explore take-back of pallets from your
delivery services.
2. Procure a recycling outlet for wooden
pallets by consulting with your solid waste
hauler, county or municipal recycling
program or independent pallet recycling
company. See a list of pallet recyclers at:
www.p2pays.org/dmr m/star t.aspx?id=233.

On Sept 14-15, some of our chamber members
attended the Chamber "Fly-In," (OK, so we drove),
hosted by Congressman Mike McIntyre. The
events were well attended by our entire state. Our
representatives at the federal level gave us updates
on Monday.
Our group included Representatives Mike
McIntyre, Bob Etheridge and Larry Kissell. These
gentlemen work very well together to represent our
citizens and our military in this area.
Paul Dordal updated the group on BRAC.
Scott Dorney of the Military Business Center hit
the highlights on government contracting. Scott Perry talked about the
growth occurring in his Defense and Security Technology Accelerator.
Wednesday we heard from reporters and journalists, (ie Judy
Woodruff), military men (General Wes Clark & the CNO Admiral Gary
Roughead), and former Senator Trent Lott. We have an awful lot going on
in our corner of North Carolina both with the military and with our many
business opportunities.
The D.C. trip was also another opportunity for us to talk with other
chamber executives. Although we have a lot to improve on, I am proud
to report that we are the only Chamber that I know of that is growing in
members and revenue in this trying economy. Our events this year have been
sell-outs.
I want to thank you for your support and membership. If you have an
interest, I encourage you to attend next year's Chamber Fly-In.
