Q: Why did you decide to join Gamma Phi Beta? A: I am from a town of 12,000 (North Platte, Nebraska) and the whole process of recruitment was overwhelming to me. From the moment I stepped into Gamma Phi Beta, I felt at home. To quote Sally Fields, "They liked me. They really liked me!" I knew I had found my niche. For an insecure 18-year-old, this was so important. Q: What did your undergraduate experience mean to you? A: My mother always threatened to send me to Stevens College so I could acquire some manners. That was an all-girls college and I was having none of that. Gamma Phi gave us new pledges a few etiquette lessons and it was really like attending Miss Pittipat's School of Refinement. Our housemother, Mother Yoes, made sure we used the correct silverware and taught us when we were finished to place the fork and knife together across the plate. I still do that to this day. Pi Chapter helped me with life skills, gave me confidence, and helped me learn to take responsibility. We all supported each other. I was so proud to be a Gamma Phi. Q: What are some of your favorite memories? A: Husker football, Monday night dinners and the busboys, formals, May Day, pinnings, DB&G and Don & Millie's, coed follies, my summer job at the Cornhusker Hotel, and working on the school newspaper. I loved every minute at 415 N. 16th St. Q: What degree did you earn? A: I earned a bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology. Q: How did the sorority prepare you for life after college? A: Gamma Phi gave me confidence, and the ability to work with a lot of different personalities. I learned how to organize and be a responsible and giving person. We were always there for each other. I was a speech therapist for one year and then was hired as a stewardess for United Airlines. That adventure lasted for almost 34 years. Q: What advice would you give to undergraduates or to younger alumnae who are early in their careers? A: Wherever you live, join the Gamma Phi alumnnae group. You will not only make new friends but you will also have a base from which to network. Other sisters may be able to help with getting a job or directing you to doctors, schools, etc. if you are new to a community. There is an instant bond when you discover a new acquaintance is also a Gamma Phi. Q: Where do you volunteer and what do you do specifically? A: My volunteer job is "heaven on earth." I am a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo where I mentor new volunteers. I also do interpretive shifts at the galapagos tortoises, panda trek, Australian outback, orangutans, and the elephant cart at the elephant odyssey. We have carts with props and talk about them as they relate to the animals. We are a conservation organization that tries to inform the public about what is happening in the world to different species and how we can all help to save these animals from extinction. I also work the front information booth and meet lots of people. Whenever I see someone wearing Husker or Gamma Phi garb I always introduce myself and offer as much help as they need. If any of you ever get to San Diego you must let me show you the zoo. Q: Why do you feel it is important to give back? A: I spent four of the most wonderful years of my life at Gamma Phi Beta. Gamma Phi has always been one of the top sororities at Nebraska and I want it to stay that way. It is a part of me—a good part of me—and I like to give back so other young ladies can experience what I did. I know when I was there we really depended on the alumnae when the house needed something. I was so proud of all the ladies in my pledge class who donated to the house renovation. It was my way of saying thank you, Gamma Phi, for one of the most memorable times of my life. Q: Anything else you would like to add? A: I really hope everyone will come back to Lincoln for our centennial celebration in November. You will be so impressed with what they have done to the house. It will be so much fun to reconnect and celebrate the beautiful white house at 415 N. 16th St. A Slice of Pi page 2 Thank You, Alumnae, for Your Contributions W e are truly grateful to the dedicated alumnae who donated to Pi Chapter's annual campaign during the fall 2013 appeal. Your generosity is greatly appreciated as we focus on reducing our mortgage debt and providing educational resources to our undergraduate members. Lois L.
