A
s I stood on the front stoop of the Gamma Phi Beta
house on a hot August afternoon, I had no idea what
was behind that big front door. I was a 17-year-old about to
begin my first days of college and thought joining a sorority
would be fun and a good way to meet new friends. I knew so
little of what I would soon find was really beyond that door:
sisterhood, friendship, love, encouragement, and history. In
the months to follow, I would learn what made Pi Chapter
and Gamma Phi Beta so special. A history of lifelong
friendships built within the walls of that beautiful chapter
house and a common bond uniting Gamma Phis
of all ages.
Pi Chapter was chartered at the University
of Nebraska on May 27, 1914. Our beautiful
chapter house was built at 415 North 16th
Street in 1927. On November 15, 2014, we will
celebrate 100 years of Pi Chapter and a century
of sisterhood. On behalf of the centennial
planning committee, I invite you to join us for this
momentous occasion to 'Celebrate Pi.' We have
planned a special weekend to bring Gamma
Phis from near and far together to celebrate the
rich history of Pi Chapter.
The festivities will take place November 14-16,
2014, which I should point out is a non-football
home game weekend. Among the events planned
are an informal social hour on Friday evening,
house tours on Saturday and Sunday, and a
dinner and celebration at the Embassy Suites
in Downtown Lincoln on Saturday evening. International
President Krista Spanninger Davis, Bowling Green
State '85, has accepted Pi Chapter's invitation to join us
for this special celebration and will speak on behalf of
International Council. We encourage you to contact your
pledge class to plan your special get-together for happy
hour, dinner, or brunch during the weekend. This will be
a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with your sisters
and catch up on all that has happened since your
days at Pi Chapter. Additional information, including
accommodations, costs, time of events, as well as
regular updates will be on the centennial webpage
at www.gammaphibetaunl.com, so be sure to check
back frequently.
The Pi Chapter collegiate members are putting
together a history of Pi Chapter presentation and
display for the centennial. If you have a particularly
special memory or story to share, you are welcome to send
that along with any photos to pichaptercentennial2014@
gmail.com. You are also welcome to bring with you any
memorabilia that you may display at the chapter house
during house tours throughout the weekend.
We look forward to seeing you in November to 'Celebrate Pi!'
