2A Daily News – Friday, May 13, 2011 Community people&events Military Seaman Jacob R. Schlereth Coast Guard Seaman Jacob R. Schlereth, son of Jan- ice Irvin and Stephanie and Daymon W. Schlereth of Corning, recently graduated from the US Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, NJ. During the eight-week training program, Schlereth completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, physical fitness, health and wellness, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. Men and women train together from the first day in the Coast Guard just as they will work together aboard ships and shore units throughout the world. To rein- force the team concept, all recruits are trained in pre- venting sexual harassment, drug and alcohol awareness, civil rights training, and the basics of the work-life bal- ance.Schlereth and other recruits also received instruc- tion on the Coast Guard's core values — honor, respect and devotion to duty — and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Schlereth is a 2010 graduate of Corning Union High School of Corning. Main St. 90 Courtesy photo On May 5, the Red Bluff FFA sent five judging teams to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the FFA State Finals.These teams consisted of Livestock Judging, Farm Records, Specialty Animals, Forestry and Best Informed Greenhand. These teams had been practicing and preparing for this competition for months. While in San Luis Obispo the FFA members were also given the opportunity to take a historical tour of Hearst Castle and visit a local farmers market.The members enjoyed getting to visit Cal Poly, inter- act with its students and participate in their competitions.
