TENNIS By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor There literally was no way the Spartans were going to lose. Red Bluff produced both final- ists in the singles and doubles com- petitions at the recently completed Eastern Athletic League — South Finals. In the singles tournament, senior Cody Yarbrough beat freshmen teammate Thunder Shaffer 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match. Yarbrough came from behind to knock off Oroville’s Steven Vang 3- 6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the final. “It was awesome,” Yarbrough said. “It was nice both of us were in the final so no matter what hap- pened Red Bluff was going to win.” It wasn’t all bad for Shaffer, as he later teamed with Yarbrough to reach the finals of the double tour- nament. Once again it was Red Bluff ver- sus Red Bluff as on the other side of the court were Paul Hendricks and C.J. Varner, who had pulled off a major upset knocking off the tour- nament’s No. 1 seed from Oroville Shaffer and Yarbrough won the all-Red Bluff final 6-4, 6-2. “We didn’t start off the year great, but lately we’ve just been rocking it,” Yarbrough said. All four players qualified for the CIF tournament this weekend. Yarbrough and Shaffer will play in both the singles and doubles tournament. Also in the tournament Arthur Germano won his first round sin- gles match and Curtis Twitchell upset the No. 2 Las Plumas player in the first round and almost pulled off another upset losing to Oroville's No. 3 in three sets. Germano and Twitchell won their first round of doubles before bowing out. The section tournament is Satur- day at Foothill.
