Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope calculate that the spot, a giant long-lasting storm, is narrowing by about 580 miles a year, much faster than before. In the late 1800s the red spot was an oval 25,500 miles wide. Now it's a cir- cle that's 10,250 miles across. Michael Wong, a scien- tist at the University of California, Berkeley, said that the spot is currently a mystery. Astronomers don't know why it's red or shrinking, or what will happen next. If this pace continues, in 17 years the spot could be gone. Or it could stop at a smaller size. Wong said one theory is the spot eats smaller storms, and that it is con- suming fewer of them. By Michael Warren The Associated Press BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Dinosaur fossils found in Patagonia provide the first evidence that long-necked, whip-tailed diplodocid sau- ropods survived well beyond the Jurassic period, when they were thought to have gone extinct, Argentine pa- leontologists said Thursday. PabloGallina,aresearcher atBuenosAires'Maimonides University, described the find as the first definitive evidence that diplodocids reached South America, and the most recent geologic re- cord of this branch of sauro- pod anywhere. "It was a surprise, be- cause the first remains we found were very deterio- rated and we didn't think much of them, but later through careful laboratory work, cleaning rock from the bones, we could see that they were from a diplodo- cid, something unthinkable for South America." Gallina's team says the fossils show that diplodo- cids roamed South Amer- ica during the early Creta- ceous era, well after scien- tists thought these kinds of dinosaurs became extinct. They also suggest that the diplodocid clade, or fam- ily group, evolved from other dinosaurs before the Earth's continents split apart, which is earlier than previously thought. "Diplodocids were never certainly recognized from the Cretaceous or in any other southern land mass besides Africa," the authors wrote. "The new discovery represents the first record of a diplodocid for South Amer- ica and the stratigraphically youngest record of this clade anywhere." Explaining the find a day after the conclusions were published in the PLOS ONE scientific journal, they said the eight vertebrae they re- covered belong to a new spe- cies they named "Leinkupal laticauda." That's a combi- nation of native Mapuche words for "vanishing" and "family," and Latin words for "wide" and "tail." The remains were found in rocky outcrops of the "Bajada Colorada," a Creta- ceous-era formation south of the town of Picun Leufu in Neuquen province. Paleobiologist Paul Up- church at University Col- lege London, a sauropod ex- pert, said it suggests that not all diplodocids succumbed to a mass extinction about 140 million years ago at the end of the Jurassic period. "Here's evidence that one or two groups got through. Rather than a total extinc- tion, that it was devastat- ing, but it didn't completely kill them off," Upchurch said.
