ByDesmondButler The Associated Press SOMA, TURKEY Turkish women sang improvised la- ments about the departed over freshly dug graves Thursday, even as back- hoes carved row upon row of graves into the dirt and hearses lined up outside the cemetery with more victims of Turkey's worst mining di- saster. Rescue teams recovered another nine victims, rais- ing the death toll to 283, with scores of people still unaccounted for, according to government figures. The disaster Tuesday has set off protests around Turkey and thrown Prime Minister Re- cep Tayyip Erdogan's presi- dential ambitions off stride. Blackening his reputation further, one of Erdogan's aides was seen kicking a pro- tester held on the ground by armed police. Atagraveyardinthewest- ern town of Soma, where coal mining has been the main in- dustry for decades, women wailed loudly in an impro- vised display of mourning. They swayed and sang songs about their relatives as the bodies were taken from cof- fins and lowered into their graves.Picturesofthelostrel- atives were pinned onto their clothing. "The love of my life is gone," some sang, chanting the names of dead miners. No miner has been brought out alive since dawn Wednesday from the Soma coal mine where the ex- plosion and fire took place. Mourners said they spent their whole lives fearing something like this. "The wives of the min- ers kiss their husbands in the morning. When they come back, even if they are five minutes late, everyone starts calling. You never know what is going to hap- pen," said Gulizar Donmez, 45, the daughter and wife of a miner and neighbor of one of the victims. Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the search for survivors has been ham- pered by a mine fire that had spread to a conveyor system — engulfing a 650- foot stretch — but progress was made Thursday on ex- tinguishing it. Rescue oper- ations have been suspended several times as burning coal inside created toxic fumes and too-risky condi- tions for the rescue teams. Emergency crews de- tected a drop in carbon monoxide levels "which means that the fire has got- ten smaller," he said. Erdogan, who is expected to soon announce his candi- dacy for Turkey's presiden- tial election in August, was not welcome during his visit Wednesday. He was forced to take refuge at a supermarket after angry crowds called himamurdererandathief,in areferencetoallegedcorrup- tion, and clashed with police. Turkish newspapers printed photographs Thurs- day of an Erdogan aide kick- ing a protester who was be- ing held on the ground by special forces police. The aide, Yusuf Yerkel, issued a statement Thursday that expressed regret but also claimed he was provoked. "I am sorry that I was not able to keep calm despite all the provocations, insults and attacks that I was subjected to," he said. Erdogan had appeared somewhat tone-deaf to resi- dents' grief Wednesday, call- ing mining accidents "ordi- nary things" that occur in many other countries. In contrast, Turkish Pres- ident Abdullah Gul, visit- ing Soma on Thursday, de- scribed the coal mine explo- sion as "a huge disaster." "The pain is felt by us all," he said. The mood was more re- strained than during Erdo- gan's visit, though locals an- gry at what they saw as the slow rescue operation still shouted at him, demanding that more should be done to reach possible survivors. Erdogan has made no secret of his desire to be- come Turkey's first popu- larly elected president. His party swept local elections in March despite a corrup- tion scandal that forced him to dismiss four government ministers in December and later also implicated him and family members. By Nataliya Vasilyeva The Associated Press KIEV, UKRAINE Ukraine must pay in advance for Rus- sian gas supplies starting next month, Russian Pres- ident Vladimir Putin said Thursday, raising pressure on the struggling neighbor as Moscow voiced dismay over what it says is Ukraine's reluctance to implement an international peace plan. Putin said in a letter to European leaders that Ukraine's debt for Russian gas supplies has reached $3.5 billion, and because of its refusal to pay Moscow, it will have to switch to pre- paid gas deliveries starting from June 1. The Russian president first warned of the move in April in a letter to European leaders, whose nations are customers of Russian state- controlled Gazprom natural gas giant. Ukraine serves as a major conduit for Russian gas supplies to Europe, and pricing disputes have led to shutdowns in the past. Putin said that gas talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the European Union have failed to reach a com- promise, and pointed at Ukraine's refusal to pay even though it has received a $3.2 billion bailout from the Inter- national Monetary Fund. Ukraine says it would pay if Moscow restores the price discounts canceled af- ter the toppling of pro-Rus- sian President Viktor Yan- ukovych in February after months of protests. Russia denounced Yan- ukovych's ouster as a coup and quickly sent its troops to take over Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which itannexedweeks later. In April, a mutiny erupted across Ukraine's vast east- ern industrial heartland, where pro-Russian insur- gents seized government buildings and fighting gov- ernment troops. Many in the east see the new govern- ment in Kiev as nationalists bent on repressing Russian speakers. The insurgents in the Do- netsk and Luhansk regions declared independence after Sunday's referendum, which was rejected as a sham by Ukraine's government and the West. Those in Donetsk even asked to join Russia, but the Kremlin has clearly signaled it has no intention to do so in an apparent hope to negotiate a settlement to the worst Russia-West crisis in a generation. The insurgents in Donetsk on Thursday announced the creation of their own parlia- ment and Cabinet. They ap- pointed Igor Strelkov, the leader of the insurgents' armed wing whom Kiev says is a Russian intelligence offi- cer, as defense minister. "A civil war is under- way, and it's important for us to create a power bloc to successfully fight the Kiev junta," said Yelena Koro- vkina, a member of the self- proclaimed parliament. Kiev and the West al- leged Russia was foment- ing the unrest, which Mos- cow denies. The U.S. and Eu- ropean Union have imposed sanctions on Russia. Moscow supported a Swiss-brokered peace plan, which calls for ending hos- tilities and amnestying the rebels and urges a nation- wide dialogue between the government and its foes on decentralization and the sta- tus of the Russian language. Ukrainehasremainedcoolto the initiative, saying it fails to requireanyRussianactionto de-escalate the crisis.
