By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter CHICO The season-ending sweep at the hands of Shasta came back to bite Red Bluff one more time Wednesday when the North- ern Section announced its baseball playoff brackets. Red Bluff, which would have won its league with a single win in its final three games, was dropped all the way down to the No. 5 seed despite having a head-to-head advantage over No. 4 Foothill. Red Bluff won two of its three games against the Cougars this season. Shasta, the third team involved in a three-way tie for the Sac River League, was 4-2 against the other two schools, including a sweep of Red Bluff. The decision leaves the Spartans (21-8) starting the playoffs on the road. They'll face Foothill (16-11) at 7 p.m. Fri- day in the opening round of the Division 1 playoffs. Should Red Bluff get past Foothill, top- seeded Pleasant Valley (23-3) likely awaits in the semifinals. The Vikings' first-round opponent is En- terprise (12-16). On the other side of the bracket, Chico (17- 6) earned the No. 2 seed and will host West Valley (9-16-1). Defending section champion Shasta (19- 8) received the No. 3 seed and hosts Oroville (10-15-1). All first-round games are scheduled for Friday. The semifinals will be May 20 and the championship May 24. Division2 Corning (8-14) earned the No. 6 seed and will head to Susanville on Friday to play Las- sen (13-11-1) in the opening round of the Divi- sion 2 playoffs. Lassen has had the Cardinals' number this season, beating Corning by a 15-5 score twice and shutting out the Cards 4-0 in their other matchup. Defending champion Sutter (24-2) has the bracket's top seed and will host Central Val- ley (12-15-1). Last year's runner-up Yreka (22-10) has the No. 2 seed and hosts Wheatland (6- 15-1). The other first-round game sees Anderson (12-15) visit Orland (12-10). Division 5 Mercy closed its regular season Tuesday with a 22-3 win over Liberty Christian. Richie Borgess struck out nine batters in the five-inning win. He also went 3 for 5 with a single, double and a homer, knocking in six RBIs. William Gentry and Tommy Garcia each had three hits. Mercy, which won just one game last year, finished the season 4-12. Their reward? The No. 7 seed in the playoffs and a visit to Redding Christian (10-6) on Friday. The Lions outscored Mercy 22-3 over two games this season. Last year's runner-up Chester (16-5) has the top seed and will host Loyalton (5-11). Meanwhile, the section's defending cham- pion Maxwell (18-6) is the No. 4 seed and will play host to Tulelake (5-11). The other first-round game features Dun- smuir (5-14) at Burney (13-13). Tayler Zazueta failed to hit a home run Tuesday, snapping her streak of consecutive games with a homer at three. Wait, that's not the streak you were thinking about? Oh, the Lady Spartans win streak? That's still intact as Red Bluff swept both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday against Foothill to push the Spartans' win streak to a mam- moth 20 games in a row. Despite the win streak, the Lady Spartans are shut out of the Sac River League title picture. Enterprise, which swept Red Bluff early in the season, has al- ready clinched the title with a 10-1 league record. Red Bluff is 8-3 in league play and 28-6 overall. The Lady Spartans close out the regular season at 4 p.m. today against Foothill as they look to ex- tend the winning streak to 21. Hailee Nicholls doubled and drove in a run. Nicholls went the distance on the mound to earn the win. The lone run was unearned. RED BLUFF 2, FOOTHILL 1 Foothill scored in the first inning, but the Lady Spartans tied the game in their top of the second and got the winning run in the fourth.
