Paul Winer Comic ����� | S���� B���C�� Quartzsite Torch Run promotes Special Olympics By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear QUARTZSITE, AZ - May 30th members of Quartzsite Police Department and family ran and rode bicycles during the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. This was the fi rst year Quartzsite participated. The purpose of the run, which was created in 1981, is to increase awareness and raise funds for the Special Olympics movement. Local public safety personnel received the torch at the Quartzsite Fire Station and carried it along Hwy. 95, on to E. Main Street ending at the Chevron Station on Riggles. The VFW Post 769 provided a delicious breakfast for all par- ticipants including the escorting agencies. 100% of all money raised for the Law Enforcement Torch Run goes directly to support Special Olympics athletes in Arizona and their supporting programs. 91.5% of all money that is given to Special Olympics Arizona goes directly to support Special Olympics programs and athletes. - See more at: www. specialolympicsarizona.org. Locals honored by VFW Post 769 On April 18th, VFW Post 769 mem- bers honored local organizations, businesses and individuals who have supported their fundraising efforts in- cluding the annual Golf Tournaments. Dennis Dole, Past Dept. Commanter Arizona, explained over the years, the post has donated $73,000 to local and regional charities, however their funds have helped people worldwide. Presented plaques honoring their support were: Roadrun- ner Gem & Mineral Club, Herb's Hardware, Hardie's Jewelry, Quartzsite General Store, Silly Al's Pizza, Mary Ann Peck, Gene & Doris Swallow, Town of Quartzsite, and Yacht Club. VFW Post 769 also presented the 2013 Fire Fighter Award to Quartzsite Fire Chief Kevin Hess for his service to the commu- nity. Congratulations to everyone! �����| S������ R��� G�����-B���
